Issues: The principal put a lot of pressure on her because he thought he "struck gold" with her as a bilingual teacher. She knew what the students were saying, but did not understand the meaning behind what they were saying.

Combat the Issues: Talk to the principal about expectations and struggles and create a relationship with him. Create a relationship with the students, as well, so you can have a conversation with them about the meaning behind the language. Find Spanish-speaking people your age to converse with outside of the classroom. Have confidence that she can learn the context of the language with more experience.

She knew the language but she lacked the background knowledge so she she didn't know the underlying meaning of jokes. She also relied on her assistant for help with meaning. This is similar to ELL students learning idioms.

She was also not comfortable writing in Spanish, so her students probably lacked proficiency in writing.

It will take longer than one year to be proficient in any language.

She didn't have background knowledge about the learning process or learning standards.

She can talk to her principal about expectations for ELL students.
