Interview with Doug Enloe, Director of Counseling

Doug Enloe, the director of counseling at St. Michael's High School has been a school counselor for over 40 years and as a new counselor, I am extremely fortunate to have his expertise and input every day. It was a no brainer to interview Doug because when it comes to school counseling, he has seen it all.
It was interesting to hear Doug's perspective on school safety because he's been around prior to gun violence in schools and has been able to see how safety and risk assessment has changed.
1. Training is everything! If school staff and personnel are trained properly with the local police department, many threats are handled before they turn into something big.
2. Risk assessment teams are vital to school safety.
3. It is imperative that all threats are taken seriously and administration is involved immediately.
4. Communication with teachers and students is key. When teachers or students communicate concerns with counselors, the threat can be addressed and dissolved.
5. Parents need to be informed. Upon receiving a threat, the student's parents must be notified as well as local police.
