Korean War by

The Korean War started in 1950. It began because Russia and the United States both had a different idea of how to handle Korea after the War. It was divided into two parts- North and South Korea. The North was ruled by the Soviets; the South was American government-controlled. An armistice was signed in 1953 ending the Korean War.

When the USSR equipped North Korean forces with arms and aid to help them invade South Korea, it was an act to spread communism into a U.S. backed nation. President Truman saw this as a perfect way to show the Soviets how serious America was about the policy of containment. This increased tension between the U.S. and the Soviets in the Cold War, but also lead to an active war, which hurt America because it lost troops lent to South Korea and increased the antiwar sentiment back home. Not only did the Korean war lead to tension between the US and the USSR during the Cold War, but it also lead to tension between North Korea and the US that still exists in modern times. North Korea still sees America as an enemy and the US still has troops in South Korea

Summary of Korean War

After World War Two ended, Allies went to Korea to disarm Japanese troops there. They divided Korea at the 38th parallel of latitude. Soviet troops controlled the North; American forces controlled the South. The North was Communist, and the South was American-backed. Soviets and Americans both felt they had the right to control all of Korea; therefore, border clashes were common. The Soviets quickly equipped the North giving them strong military aid. On June 25, 1950, North Korean troops invaded the South. Truman saw the invasion as a test of containment policy so ordered U.S. naval and airpower, along with the United Nations, to aid South Korea. Troops from Japan led by General MacArthur were sent to the Korean peninsula. On September 15, MacArthur ordered invasion into North Korea going into their territory. China entered fighting U.S. troops at the Yalu River. MacArthur was angered and asked for a blockade of Chinese ports, use of Nationalist forces, and bombing of Chinese cities. Truman refused, and MacArthur publicly criticized him leading to him being fired. He was replaced by General Matthew Ridgway. Small battles took place as both sides were on their border side, and peace negotiations took place in November 1951. An armistice was signed in July 1953. More than 33,600 American soldiers died in action in the Korean War, and more than 2,800 died from accidents or from disease.
