An interesting thing I found about W.E.B DuBois was that he became a successful influential writer. A piece of his “The Souls of Black Folk” was good enough to be compared to Uncles Tom Cabin for the importance of the book. This matters because it allowed him to voice and amplify the experiences and struggles him himself and other African Americans have experienced. And as a highly educated person like him (PhD from Harvard) he was able to write with credibility and legitimacy.

An important thing that I learned about Booker T. Washington was his stance in the fight for black equality. The way he pushes for black people to be accommodating towards white people seems backwards, and there are people in the video who say this, but it's interesting how he still puts funds towards completely antiracist laws. This shows his intentions for an America where blacks are free, but his method of getting there may be more roundabout.

His stance shows the most extreme version of "freedom" for the black people by directly freeing them from the entirety of the United States. The fact that his movement gained popularity shows how little hope there was at the time that things could work out between black and white people.

This is a detail that adds on to what we know about Jack (from the book Stamped), and it shows us that not everyone considered him as an "avatar" for the black community. It shows that his flamboyancy wasn't appreciated by every black person.

This is important because in his time the Jim Crow Laws were in full effect, forcing the Black community into boxes designed to make them less like themselves and more like the Whites. The Jim Crow Laws also forced extreme segregation upon Black people, and Jack Johnson broke through this by marrying white women.

What I learned was that Du Bois was one of the most influential African American thinkers of the 20th century, he also earned a Bachelor's degree from Fisk. He was the first African American to earn a PhD from Harvard University, and he also encouraged nations to fight against racism and grant political rights to those of African ancestry. This matters because this shows that you can basically accomplish anything in your life without it having to do with your skin color or your race, and how using your voice can make a impact to others.

Something that stood out to me about Ida B. Wells is her bravery. In a time when lynching was extremely popular and was happening left and right to Black people she still stood against it and voiced her opinion publicly. She used her position as the co-owner of a newspaper to spread the message and stood firmly against the atrocities that Black people were facing. Although this made her a clear target, she felt passionately about lynching and made her voice heard, in the process bringing people together and leading the way in putting an end to the horrific act.

Washington delivered his most famous and controversial address, which became known as the Atlanta Compromise. He also thought that it was best for African Americans to gain an industrial education. Overall, why this matters based of the video is because he really tried to help out his community during the time they were struggling to get their equality with white people, and he helped out Black people to get education that probably themselves thought that they couldn't get, due to racism. He thought about others and not just himself.

What I learned was that Marcus Garvey was from Jamacia and born into poverty. He grew up viewing racism through the lens of British Colonialism. When he moved to America, lynching was common in the south, and the racist movie "The Birth Of a Nation" was popular. These events influenced him to start a Back to Africa movement. Garvey wanted to free American Black's from the harsh racism that they faced in America, believing that they could only live a life of freedom and dignity in Africa. Charged with mail fraud by the FBI, he was deported in 1927 and never returned to America. Despite that, he was still an influential person who played a large role in uniting black people globally.
