The Wellness Directors at the college report underutilization of fitness centers, classes and workshops.

1. The college implemented a monthly/yearly fee for students and faculty for facility use. Since this monthly fee went into place, fewer staff, faculty, administration and students are using the facilities, classes and workshops. It may be that the additional out of pocket monthly fee is not sustainable or unattractive for students and employees.

2. Support for the three college wide Wellness Directors comes from part time employees and work study students. There is a high rate of turnover in these positions. If there is a lack of staffing, wellness managers must step in. There is a liability/safety issue here, with lack of full-time qualified employee availability which leads to fewer programming opportunities.

3. Budget for special wellness programming comes from college programs such as Hispanic Heritage, BHM and Women’s History Month (based on voluntary participation and budget is not always guaranteed). Budget for special programming comes from the demand of these programs. There are no consistent activities such as meditation, yoga, speakers, mindfulness, health fairs, as they are based on a per campus need and budget.

When special programming for wellness is offered, it is poorly attended. Wellness Directors report that partnerships with faculty to offer student incentives (extra credit) help with attendance.

4. Full-time employee lines have been eliminated within wellness departments (no lower-level full-time staff reporting to wellness managers).

5. Effective communication of the availability of these programs is missing. The question is what is the most effective communication strategy?

Additionally, an interview with Human Resources personnel finds that employee wellness programs are also underutilized. A monthly email with wellness offerings is sent out to employees. However, these programs also have limited attendance or utilization. HR personnel report that communicating the availability of these resources has been a challenge. It may be that a needs assessment is required to investigate why this is occurring.

The following course descriptions were copied from faculty PD opportunities at University of Alabama Birmingham and University of South Carolina

Mental Health Matters: Foundations

This introductory workshop will provide participants with basic information to help better understand and support mental health for our students and our campus. Workshop topics include information about the prevalence of mental health concerns and its impact on college students nationally as well as at UAB, recognizing students in distress, strategies for supporting students with mental health concerns, campus and community resources available for student support, setting boundaries and self-care, and strategies for promoting well-being in students. Participants will receive a 4X4” decal to display indicating to students you support mental health at UAB.

QPR Suicide Gatekeeper Certification

QPR Suicide Gatekeeper Certification equips participants with a practical intervention model that can be used to provide life-saving crisis support to students who may be considering suicide. In the state of Alabama, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 15 – 24 (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2017). According to the JED Foundation (2016), suicide is also the second leading cause of death among college students. The Center for Disease Control (2015) reports 8 percent of full-time college students have had suicidal thoughts or have seriously considered suicide. 2.4 percent have made a plan and .9 percent have made a suicide attempt. Consuelo Click, LPC, a nationally-certified trainer will facilitate this workshop.

Mental Health Matters: First Aid

Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This training — which focuses on the unique experiences and needs of college students — gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

https://www.uab.edu/faculty/ctl/workshops/mental-health-matters-series

Resiliency in the Classroom

The Resiliency in the Classroom training is a 50-minute training that focuses on three major components of resilience—self-compassion, dealing with failure, and coping skills and how to incorporate these components into the classroom. Resilience has been shown to be associated to academic success and psychological well-being. This session will help instructors identify how they can strengthen students’ resilience and help them adapt to change and hardships by integrating these core competencies into their curriculum.

https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/cte/certificate_completion/mental_health_wellbeing_competency/index.php

The Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) Academy should be included as one of our feeder schools for this program. SLAM students have an interest in the exercise and sports science field and have invested over 6 years of their secondary education to learning the sports leadership and management field. This can translate into them being more inclined to transition into the Associate’s in Science Degree in Exercise and Sports Science with a Business Entrepreneurship Emphasis at MDC.

Job Growth in the Fitness Industry

Florida Job Growth

19% increase from 2016 to 2026

National Job Growth – US – Fitness Trainers and Instructors
2016 | 2024 | Percent Change | Annual Jobs per Year
15,640 | 18,540 | + 19 | 3,120*

Obtained from: https://www.careeronestop.org/Toolkit/Careers/Occupations/occupation-profile.aspx?keyword=Fitness%20Trainers%20and%20Aerobics%20Instructors&onetcode=39903100&location=Florida

*Projected Annual Job Openings refers to the average annual job openings due to growth and net replacement

National Job Growth

10% increase from 2016 to 2026 compared to 7% in all occupations

National Job Growth – US - Fitness Trainers and Instructors
2016 | 2026 | Percent Change | Annual Jobs per Year
299,200 | 329,200 | + 10% | 55,000*

Obtained from: Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2016-17 Edition, Fitness Trainers and Instructors, on the Internet at https://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-service/fitness-trainers-and-instructors.htm.
* Projected Annual Job Openings refers to the average annual job openings due to growth and net replacement

Occupations

Exercise Physiologist Athletic Trainer Personal Trainer Physical Therapist Assistant Physical Therapist | Physical Education Recreation Workers Recreation Therapist Sports and Recreation Management Business Management

Similar Degrees and Certificates Offered at other Colleges in Florida

Public State Institutions

Broward College

Associate of Science in Sports, Fitness and Recreation Management – 2191

http://www.broward.edu/academics/programs/Program%20Maps%2020162017/SBSHS/Sports,%20Fitness,%20Recreation%20Management%202191_2016-2017_FINAL.pdf

Career Pathway: Social Behavioral Sciences and Human Services (SBSHS)

Location(s): General Education courses are offered at all BC locations.
