PROMPT C: "I though how nice it would be to go for a long walk, if it hadn't been for Mama" Because it shows Meursault's preoccupation with his own desire of going for a walk, and the absence of grief/sorrow/sadness/emotion he feels at his mother's funeral.

What stylistic feature can you give that is representative of Meursault's continual absurdity?

Giving a small amount of detail to events that typically would be big events and vice versa for smaller events. He talks about his mother’s death briefly and then only mentions it in the context of it being an annoyance for him to deal with. This in conjunction with giving small events lots of detail like catching the truck with his friend gets a lot more attention than is needed. This is able to be done through the use of first-person narration. -Temi

B - Camus develops the idea of the absurd by showing conflicts between expectations and reality, or the expectation of a sort of rational where The Outsider universe is indifferent to all our expectations of a person, specifically in emotion and action. He develops this by using Meursault's outlook to be emotionless and distinguishes that the ideal world and the way that an individual might want people to act, is not what the world actually is. This is represented through every decision he makes because he is not making emotional decisions where he is irrational, but he also will not take into account what the expectations of him are if asked straight on.

For example, Marie flinches after Meursault tells her that his mother died the day before

“So I said ‘yesterday’. She flinched a little but didn’t say anything”. This quotation shows a reaction, therefore a contrast between characters in the book which are considered ‘normal’, and Meursault, who proves himself in moments such as these to be absurd.

Wyatt

The fast paced nature of events and the response and description in short sentences develops the idea of the absurd, that nothing matters. Nothing is focused on more heavily but is rather treated like an everyday occurrence. Example, page 33, "he closed the door and everyone left".

Not necessarily a lack of emotion, but a lack of emotional explanation appears throughout the novel, such as when Mersault explains that “I don’t know why… I thought of Mama.” This relationship to a loved individual is mirrored within his relationship to Marie, in which he says “for no apparent reason, the way she laughed made me kiss her.” The unflinching description of emotional ignorance is contrary to the common writing advice - “show, don’t tell”, the emotion is explained, not shown through description, and at first glance this gives the impression of apathy (even though Mersault is shown not to be always apathetic). - khalil
