I don`t think male victim domestic homicide is talked about nearly enough. Society is still caught in the idea that "men need to behave like men" and the whole issue around toxic masculinity. Men are often ridiculed when they come out to share their experiences with domestic abuse, sexual abuse ect. because they`re bigger and should be able to stop the women. It is really an unfortunate double standard that exists today.

I have never thought that male domestic violence and male sexual assault have been acknowledged enough and the stigma behind males being victims is tragic. I used to be in the California Youth Government (2015-2018) and with my position in the senate I wrote and pushed for the approval of additional funds for male victim-focused counseling/support. Due to the differences in societal views between genders, men often feel isolated in their struggle with abuse and assault because of traditional gender roles and masculinity. Being taken advantage of or abused by a woman (or other men) degrades the male victim and causes an internal fracture of one's masculinity, which leads to feelings of inferiority and shame, ultimately resulting in low reporting from male victims. From the presentation, 1/9 men are victims but that only accounts for the reported cases. In actuality, I wouldn't be surprised if the number was more like 1/6. When I investigated male abuse and rape statistics for my previous position, I uncovered that abuse and SA/R cases that occur in the prison system are not included in the general statistics... yet I'm sure everyone has heard a prison joke about dropping the soap. In a national survey of incarcerated individuals from prisons, jails, correctional facilities, etc, 10% of them have been victims of SA/R while in prison, and more than 1/3 of these victims have reported being assaulted more than 3 times. in the US alone, there are 2 million incarcerated individuals, 10% of that would be 200,000 victims that are not reported in the general statistics.

This is a case study of Katherine Knight that brutally murdered her husband after continual abuse throughout their relationship. She had also been very abusive in past relationships towards her partners but had never actually got to the murder stage until her last partner John Price. In past relationships she would have been the sole perpetrator, and in some cases the the continuum of abuse would have reached System of Violence, however in the case of her partner John, the continuum of abuse reached the Sole Victim stage. I will not put the details of the killing as they are quite horrible but feel free to follow the link to read her story.

No I do not believe male victims of domestic homicide is talked about nearly enough. With where we are at as a society you would think the stigma around male masculinity would be lifted. I agree with Jenna with how she talks about how men are ridiculed for when they share their emotions and experiences. Men are constantly placed upon a double standard and neglected when it comes to mental health. And when they are the victims of homicide, they are talked about in a fashion that doesn't necessarily justify it but in most cases brushes it off because they are men "who should be able to handle it". Where if it was a child or woman, uproar would ensue.

Males being victims of domestic violence is statistically rare, so it is not talked about enough, however, it is also likely underreported since most men may not see it as abuse when it technically is (e.g. girlfriend slapping you for forgetting anniversary). As for more aggressive types of abuse, I think some men are embarrassed to admit they are victims of abuse, especially abuse from a female. I think this comes from the toxic patriarchal culture that we live under where men feel obligated to be strong and dominant and women are supposed to be docile and harmless. I think with the Johnny Depp case male victims may feel more comfortable with coming forward.

The abuse began on a holiday when the hotel they stayed in didn't meet Weissenberg's expectations and she wanted him to complain to the hotel manager but he refused. In response she began to slap him around the head and scream at him. Afterward she attempted to justify her outburst by telling him about her troubled childhood and abuse in previous relationships. As the years went on the emotional dependency grew and she began to track his every moment and dictate what he did/where he went. This went on for 6 years and Weissenberg ended up in the emergency room on multiple occasions with cuts and broken bones.
When Weissenberg eventually escaped this situation he began a self-help group that offers counseling for men in crisis situations and safe places to take refuge in.

Shanelle Siemens

Similar to sexual assault cases where males are the victim, male victim domestic violence or homicide is a discourse not brought up often due to stigma and cultural notions that men are stronger and cannot be assaulted by a woman. This is unfortunate as there are real cases where male victims suffer death but their stories are not mentioned. One such case is Simon Gilchrist who was murdered by his girlfriend in 2004. His mother later admitted that she did not notice the signs of abuse on her son because he was a man.

The topic of domestic homicide and abuse in regards to males being the victims is rarely talked about. This is due to the low reports men do when experiencing abuse from their significant other because of the male stigma of having to "man up" or "be a man". So men reporting that their 5 foot girlfriend is beating them, would fear being ridiculed for letting it happen cause they are usually a lot larger and stronger. I also believe when men do open up about being abused people do not take them seriously and shy them away because women in our society are mainly seen as victims of domestic abuse rather than being an actual abuser.

Personally, I do not think male victims are talked about enough in any capacity. Although our dialogue is increasing and gaining awareness for domestic abuse and victims/survivors, these people discussed are rarely the cases that involve men. As mentioned in the lecture, the media often does not cling onto stories of male victims of abuse, as they do not fit the "perfect" or "ideal" victim narrative. With the newly and highly publicized case of Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard, I think we begin to see the complexities of abusive relationships, and the biases of gender dynamics. Although this case sparked some meaningful and necessary dialogue in the media concerning male victims, I believe this is only a small step in shedding light on the darkness and isolation for ALL victims of Intimate Partner Violence.

Male domestic violence and male mental health in general is not talked about enough in the media, or within homes. There are countless studies and statistics outlining the underrepresentation of support for male victims of IPV, depression, and other mental health issues. Due to the "be a man" stigma, many men suppress their emotions, not take advantage of available resources, or don't ask for help in any capacity. Opening the conversation in your own home with your male friends and family to ensure they feel seen, heard, and supportive, is so important.

Previously, Johnny domestically assaulted Turner-Good and was placed on probation. Johnny then got into his apartment and stabbed Zachary in the chest, from which he later died in hospital. Regardless of who the victim is, I think that there is always stigma around victims coming forward, but those negative connotations are even worse for male victims. Because of stereotypes we have learned through socialization, we have been taught that men are supposed to be the strong, dominant one's who hold the power, not the woman. So this idea would perpetuate that if men are the victims, that they were either weak, or showed too much power and likely 'deserved it.' I think these stigmas are why male victim homicide and abuse in general is talked about much less.

No, I do not think that cases of male victim domestic homicide are given the same attention females, and are not talked about enough in general. I think that this is the case for two main reasons. One reason being that women are more often the victims of this type of violence and therefore their cases are happening more often and given more attention - But this does not mean that it isnt an issue that cases of male homicide are not given attention when they do happen. Another potential cause of this is that males being "victims" does not fit the narrative of gender roles and expectations and falls into the idea of toxic masculinity - therefore resulting in stigma and less conversation about a prevalent issue. We often rarely think of women as being capable of abuse and murder of a male in their life because again this phenomenon does not align with the gendered expectations and norms that we have created in western society.
The article that I have linked provides an example of male victim domestic homicide. And considering this is the topic of conversation in the padlet discussion I thought that it might be of interest to note that it was actually much more difficult to find male victim domestic homicide case examples than women case examples on the same topic - even as a searched "male victim" i was still primarily presented female victim cases.

I believe this to be the case because of our build in schemas and stereotypes. I hope from the recent court cases popularized on social media it will allow for the normalized discussions and understandings that men can be victims of domestic abuse which can also result on homicide.

I don't think that male domestic homicide is talked about enough due to the toxic masculinity and stigma being attached to males and their victim profiles. Society usually has a pre-disposed way of thinking that women are the victims due to their innately weaker position in society and the elevation of female victims vs. male victims.

Also, males do not usually come forth as victims as they don't want to look weak or unable to take care of themselves properly because in society stereotypically they are the ones who should protect others from harm and not get harmed themselves.

They see it as a sense of shame and embarrassment if they are the ones getting hurt especially by women as society has ingrained it into them that they are stronger and have a higher position in the world than women.

For example, Katherine Knight stabbed her lover with a butcher knife at least 37 times in February 2000, she then chopped him up, cooked him, and prepared to serve him to his own children.

She was diagnosed with postnatal depression after witnesses saw her violently pushing and swinging her second child in a stroller down a busy street. She spent a few months in a psychiatric hospital, where she told nurses that she intended to kill a mechanic who had fixed Kellett’s car because that made it possible for him to leave her.

When he left her, she soon remarried John Charles Thomas Price. Katherine Knight took a butcher knife from next to her bed — where she had always kept them — and stabbed Price 37 times. According to evidence, he woke up during the attack but could not fight her off.

He succumbed to his wounds and Knight dragged his body downstairs, skinned him, and hung his body from a meat hook in the living room. Then, she decapitated him and cut up pieces of his body to cook in a dish with potato, pumpkin, beets, zucchini, cabbage, squash, and gravy.

This may be because of it being statistically rare, but even then, it should be equally talked about because it is just as serious as female victim domestic homicide. However, many cases of male victim domestic homicide are not reported resulting in low report rates; this could be due to the stigma surrounding violence towards men. There is a misconception in our society that males can't be the victims of abuse or violence from females, but that is wrong.

No, I don't think that male victim homicide or domestic abuse is talked about enough. There is a deeply rooted stigma stemming overall from the patriarchy, which discourages men from coming forward with their stories due to fear of being emasculated and seen as less than. Toxic masculinity encourages men to continue to be silent and not come forward about their abuse. We saw instances of this in Hollywood with actors such as Terry Crews and Brendan Fraser.

However, I think it's crucial to highlight the inherent problem of only bringing up male victims in response to a woman sharing her story. There are instances in online spaces where male victims are specifically only brought up to silence women, which helps neither male victims, nor women who are speaking out against the patriarchy.

I cannot think of a single case/story I have read or heard (other than this presentation) that has talked about male domestic homicide, which is quite jarring considering the amount of crime podcasts I listen to. I think it is extremely important that we talk about the realities of male domestic homicide and continue to spread awareness.

- Tamia Duchesneau

male homicide is not talked about enough, I think because women are seen as the weaker gender that violence against them happens more frequently and therefore is talked about more, however men can be victims too and this stigma needs to be broken.

I do not think male victim domestic homicide is talked about enough. I think all aspects in regard to male are lacking on the amount of discussions being had such as mental health etc. Our society has set these standards for what is seen as a "man" and then it creates a stigma about males and their feelings/stories. Especially male victims. I think we need to become more educated on these topics and speak on them more often.

I don't think there are as many male domestic murders as there are female domestic murders. The first is the power gap between men and women, and the second is the difference in emotional thinking between men and women. I don't deny the existence of male domestic murders, but I really can't think of an example. The recent domestic violence case is the only example I can think of, but it wasn't murder either.

I don't think society talks about male victims a lot, in general. Part of the reason I believe we don't talk about male victim in domestic violence is cases, is because of toxic masculinity. It is the whole idea that men are strong and are considered weak if they are abused by someone, especially a women. Society questions a man "manliness", if they report the abuse, instead of sympathizing with them.

I don't think the domestic violence or homicide directed towards men is talked about nearly enough. It is not reported in the news very frequently and I believe that the stigma around men speaking out against abuse probably skews reports about the prevalence of such violence. I think the media portrayal of a typical heterosexual relationship portrays the man as being strong, and if a men were to open up about being abused, they may fear being perceived as weak. If domestic violence against men was less stigmatized, it would probably prevent domestic homicide against men.
