Chaucer uses shifts in power to describe a person's character in "The Wife of Bath's Tale". One example is when the king hands the knights fate over to the queen, "So ceaselessly, he gave the queen the case and granted her his life, and she could choose whether to show him mercy or refuse" (Line 79). Here it shows that the husband is giving power to his wife, showing that the king feels that couples should share responsibility. The power also changes from the knight to the old woman when she asks him to marry her, "Before this court I ask you then, sir knight, to keep your word and take me for your wife; for well you know that I have saved your life" (Line 228). The old woman has just saved the knights life and now ask the knight honors their agreement by marrying her, but the knight begins to protest. This shows how dishonorable the knight is for not repaying a favor.

In The Wife of Bath's Tale, Chaucer shifts the power of the King to the Queen and then the power of the knight to the old woman. When the knight had committed a horrible crime, the King was deciding the fate of the knight, but the Queen intervened and begged for the knight's life in her hands. The King gave the power to the Queen, this shows that he respects his wife's wishes. The old woman stood up in the court and asks the knight that this was the honor that he must keep since she saved his life. He had to marry her. Before anything, he promised to keep his word if she had saved his life, not knowing the agreement. It showed how desperate he was. After, when she asks that they wed, he protested in front of the court (Queen), but he had to agree to it because if he had said no, off with his head. This shows how he does not follow honor at all for the old woman or himself.

The shift of power is from The Wife of Bath, she's telling the story, saying how things went with these people, but then you have the Friar and another man come in and argue, Friar is annoyed with the Wife. The other man is annoyed with Friar and then says let her speak, so Friar says go ahead. Another example is the king giving the queen authority to the knight , saying it's your decision. She then thanks him, giving back some authority. Also the "old woman" at the end she's in charge talking and giving him two choices, giving the knight the authority, but he then gives it back to her saying, what do you choose. Also when the queen asks him what is it women desire she's giving him authority to explain himself to save himself. But then he challenges her by saying now you choose, giving it back to her. There is many times, but authority is always being given back to the person that gave it to someone.
