It depends on the topic. Sometimes it is better to sit on the fence ~~ruther then being~~ rather than to be involved in a quarrel.

If I do not listen to the opinions of others I shut myself down to the possibility of evolving that opinion. Sure, I might not agree with someone on something but that is not to say I don't ~~can from~~ listening to them. I get to see where they are coming from and learn their side of the story. In the end if I still disagree with them that's fine, no harm has been done, and if I see they have a point that's even better.

I think sometimes we have to "sit on the fence"... Once, two my friends were in a conflict and I tried to reconcile them ~~with each other~~. It worked. Later they became very friendly and quarreled with me. I don't know what a reason for it they found. ~~So far~~. So I decided that ~~the~~ a better way is to sit on the fence. If I had friends in high places I would not use them, I would not asked for their help. But I think ~~the~~ it is better is have a true friends. And friends have to help each other. ~~I'm absolutely mutual people - on the help I'll answer the same thing~~. But if people help me, I'll help them.

If we consider a concrete situation, quarrel of friends, then I adhere to such positions:
-It is worth interfering if:
*I am sure of desire of both parties to reconcile;
*I am the real cause of conflict;
*the quarrel because of a trifle dragged on.
-It is worth keeping aloof if:
*recent conflict;
*both parties demand council, and I can't be impartial;
*the quarrel is small.
