However, I do acknowledge this unlike Rob, who doesn't seem to notice the hypocrisy. Hobbs described how he tried to stay out of Rob's problems that he did not understand, choosing to simply listen and agree instead. I believe I also tend to avoid contributing to situations that I did not experience. Because I think I would have interacted with Rob similar to Hobbs, I think Rob would have perceived me like Jeff, which would be a solid friendship. However, Hobbs claimed that Rob had deeper relationships with other friends. I believe that Rob respected Oswaldo the most. Oswaldo was also from Newark, so they shared many of the same feelings. Like Rob, Oswaldo kept to himself and had contempt for the Yale culture. Although he is observing Rob as a person in this novel, I think Rob is actually observing Jeff more, as well as all the other different types of people, or Yalies, who attend the school. Rob's openness to Jeff is what sets Jeff apart from the other Yalies though. Jeff doesn't pretend to know what kind of life and where Rob came from, he simply tries to listen and understand when Rob decides to open up, and Rob reciprocates that same listening, as evidenced by their conversation about Hobb's ex. In this way, Rob respects Jeff the most, simply trying to observe and understand the characters in his life at Yale who come from much different, much more privileged backgrounds. Rob tries to keep to himself and just move along in the system he is in, but respects and listens to Jeff regardless of their differences. I think I also relate to Jeff the most because of our situations in society. I, like Jeff, am grateful for the bouts of privilege I have and try to take advantage of them, the same way Jeff is taking advantage of the school he was able to attend. Additionally, I, like Jeff, admit to some ignorance I have when it comes to my position. For example, Jeff didn't even consider the effects he would have on someone when he forgot to bus his plate in the cafeteria. This ignorance I am also guilty and conscious of, which I am trying to better myself on. Raquel was vocal about her opinions and what bothered her, and since I usually communicate how I feel and my opinions I am similar to her in that way. However, similar to Hobbs the lifestyle that I grew up in and my access to an education was much different than a lot of Rob's customers. Rob Peace respects everyone that reciprocate his respect. For instance, Jeff, Raquel, and Oswaldo all treated Rob as an equal and had morals that matched his, but the water-polo team members that didn't think to clean up after themselves showed Rob where their priorities were. I think Rob would've respected me if I respected him and thought about how my actions affect others. For Rob he was annoyed when the privileged people at Yale were oblivious to their advantages they had in life or their actions. Even though Jeff grew up in the same community as the other over-privileged students, he knew that he had those advantages and acknowledged the differences between him and Rob but didn't think of it in any negative tone. Hobbs grew up in an affluent household, similar to myself, and was privileged to not worry about necessities like money and food. In Yale, Hobbs met Rob who had basically the complete opposite set of experiences than himself; Rob grew up in a poor area and always worried about basic necessities. Whenever Rob would talk about these struggles, Hobbs would simply listen and agree as he could never truly understand what it was like. When I personally cannot relate to something, I feel that it is better to listen than give my opinion, similar to Hobbs.
