but where is it that we see crafts these days ? showcased in our houses as decor , or collectibles , souvenirs

i feel that craft that started out with a need has lost its reason within its people , lets take a look at the most basic need thirst i.e. drinking water , how many of us turn to refrigerator for chilled water , 8 out of 10 ? maybe, this a easy image of how we secluded matka until it went away from our modern modular kitchen . we drink out of plastic bottles and glass containers , we became fascinated with something called perfection , balance through our life , while our craft remains alive as a mere art form now .

according to my understanding craft reflects a society , the major reason for depletion in this community is that the aren't getting enough appreciation in terms of recognition and money , to meet the needs of todays life, that leads to looking for work elsewhere , the kind of labor , time , most importantly skills that go into making a handmade product is undervalued by the people of the same society , we bargain with the unorganized sector and end up spending largely on industrialized places , especially in India , we have enormous amounts of crafts around us and we end up spending on identical machine made products .

but crafts not only depend on the society , it depends on the approach of the craftsmen also for example on one hand a 3rd generation earthen potter from Bihar turns to Mumbai and experiments with earthenware pottery , the entire family learns it and specialize in different aspects of it , the man is Mr. B.R. Pandit , you can check his work on www.panditartceramics.com , you can see how he's made art out of his work both aesthetic and functional, how hes encouraged his wife and daughter inlaw to learn this art and practice it . At the same time hundred others that do not want to pass on their legacy as it doesnt come out very feasible , or their children chose a different alternative because of different options and interests , as we have now started to move away from the kings son shall always rule .

As citizens of an aware world we are more about our consumption and waste and we now regulate what goes in our body and what happens around it , the makers society movement thoroughly encourages the culture of making for ourselves by our hands , the culture that is ours . DO IT YOUR SELF.

we come from a craft enriched background , if you've lived in India , you definitely grew up with some or the other form of it , i grew up with an essence of the bell metal dokra craft. , the craftsmen there without a much knowledge of what art or design or business work on making a aesthetic yet functional , their original tribal forms yet something that sells . their work is instinctual and emotional , they have a though process that we in design learn by the theoretical process , and do it with experiment , craft according to me exists within design . We as designers can help them by understanding it and making small changes within the process for efficient quality , less wastage , optimum production . We can help by making it a part of our life and finally mingling with the process of presentation and selling .
