Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world, impacting multiple areas of society, including the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While AI presents numerous opportunities, it also brings psychological fears and ethical challenges that must be carefully addressed.

One major concern is job displacement due to automation. Many individuals experience anxiety and stress when facing uncertainty about their professional futures. Psychological studies have shown that job insecurity is strongly associated with depression, lower well-being, and even physical health problems. To reduce this impact, governments and organizations must implement retraining and reskilling programs, along with providing psychological support to affected workers.

Scientific research supports these concerns. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour (Willis et al., 2019) found that people are psychologically affected by being replaced by machines rather than humans. Interestingly, while people generally prefer others to be replaced by humans rather than robots, when imagining their own jobs being replaced, they actually feel less personal threat when replaced by machines. However, this comes with increased concerns about long-term economic security.

Another significant challenge involves the ethical implications of AI, especially related to bias in decision-making. Many AI systems are trained on data that contain social biases, which can lead to discriminatory outcomes. These biases can result in psychological consequences such as lower self-esteem, increased stress, and feelings of exclusion. A psychological approach to this issue includes promoting ethical AI development and educating users to critically assess and understand AI systems.

To ensure AI contributes positively to the SDGs, interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial. Developmental psychologists, AI developers, and policymakers must work together to address public fears, confront ethical challenges, and unlock AI’s full potential for social good. Encouragingly, many institutions have already begun applying ethical guidelines to promote fairness and inclusivity in AI applications.
