Adapted from Miriam E. Sweeney's article "How to Read for Grad School," 2021.

Unlike a novel, reading an article from start to finish is not the best use of your time. You are looking for key concepts and critical information, and there is an art to reading for academic research.

1. Start by checking the name of the journal and the author's credentials. Who is this person and what can you find out about this journal?

2. Next, carefully read the title of the article and the abstract. The abstract succinctly describes the thesis argument or hypothesis, the evidence, and the conclusion.

3. How is the author framing their work - feminism? populism? Marxism? Nationalism? Other -isms?

4. Skip to the discussion and conclusion! At this point you should have a good sense of whether or not this article will help you with your research.

5. Next, skim the middle section of the paper for the important information you need for your research. Take notes! Go into this section armed with the information of where the author is coming from, and the conclusions they reached.

6. Take a critical perspective.
