It was a really insightful call which was wonderfully moderated by posh. Some of my takeaways include how out of our tool kit, theres not one right option to deal with racism but rather we need to assess the situation and see which response to the situation, suits the best and more importantly, is able to give us peace of mind. Furthermore, i understood the importancebof forgiveness and while in an ideal world, just forgiving and moving on would be ideal, we are humans too and would feel upset and angry and thus find it hard to forgive. Hence it is about tapping onto our inner strength to gain the ability to forgive for our own peace of mind. Of course if the situation is really bad, we have the option of legal action, but ultimately, forgiving is a gift we can give ourselves. Thank you so much for the call; i really learnt a tremendous amount being a silent observer 😊

My takeaway from this discussion is that one has to be emotionally intelligent (EI). There are two aspects to this - internal and external:

1. Internal - EI also means that you should be aware of your emotions. Common feelings when faced with racist remarks could be anger, sadness, hurt, confusion, hatred etc. You cannot control what people might say/do, but you can definitely control the power they have over you and your emotions. One must try to not let their emotions cloud their rational thinking.

2. External - One must harness their EI and know how to react and when to react. Do not be afraid to clarify and ask questions. Take your time to react - do not beat yourself up for not having the perfect response at the time. If it is someone you have contact with you can reach out to them later. However, if the racist actions are grave, it is good to know that there are laws set in place and you can hand this situation over to the legal authorities.

Thank you everyone for joining the call and sharing your perspectives. Definitely taking back a lot of valuable lessons with me!
Sairam :)
