The Egyptians believed that there was a life after death. They thought that people had two important parts: a "ka" (life force that they only had while alive) and a "ba" (more like a soul). If the "ka" and "ba" could be united in the afterworld the person would live in the afterlife. A key component was that the body be preserved for this to happen. This is why the Egyptians used the embalming process, or mummification, to preserve the dead. Find out more about mummification in the video below!

Although hieroglyphics are Egyptian, the word hieroglyphics is Greek. “Hiero” means “holy” and “glyphics” means “marks” or “writings” - so the word means “holy writings“. The Egyptians believed there was great power in a name. If someone’s name was remembered then he or she would survive in the afterlife. That’s why pharaohs’ names were written in hieroglyphics in their tombs!

1) Ancient Egyptians believed that people were made out of clay on a potter’s wheel by the river god Khnum
2) Isis’ sister Nephthys wore intense headgear which included a house and a basket
3) Aside from all the trickery, conflict, and murder among the gods, their roles kept changing as time went on - Isis, for example, went from being Horus’ mother to being his wife, then back again. Soap operas have nothing on Egyptian myths.
4) Anubis, the god of death, has the head of a jackal. It’s believed that jackals became associated with death because they kept trying to dig up bodies from graveyards and eat them.
5) Ancient Egyptians preserved the bodies of the dead so that the soul could reunite with its body and properly enjoy the afterlife. When preparing a body for mummification, the priest would pull the brain out through the nose, using a long metal hook.
6) Cats were considered sacred in Ancient Egypt
7) Many of the Egyptian gods were depicted with animal heads and human bodies. The animal head was often used to illustrate the god’s characteristics. For example, Sekhmet’s lion head represented her courage and ferocity.
8) Thoth had power as a judge of good and evil for the gods, but his main duty was being the scribe of the underworld. He wrote The Book of Thoth, which contains the secrets of the universe.
9) Nut is best known as the god who swallows the setting sun (Ra) and then gives birth to him every morning.
10) Seth and Bastet are in the Marvel comics! Seth (in Marvel) didn't like his fellow gods so he impersonated the god Set and stole his worshippers. Later, he defeated and imprisoned some of his fellow gods for centuries. The gods and goddesses were freed later by Thor and Odin. In a fight against Odin, Seth lost his sand. Seth went to Earth and attacked Donald Blake (a human form created by Odin for Thor to be the host of to learn humility. Later Donald gained a life of his own) during an operation and fought Thor and The Thing. Bastet makes an appearance as the god that Wakanda's worship. Bastet’s appearance is somewhat altered to make her a panther god to fit into the Wakanda's theme of The Black Panther.
