Many Americans had a desire to win the war, and they wanted to win quickly. Harry Truman claimed that he never lost any sleep over dropping the bombs on Japan, doesn’t regret his decision and still hadn’t apologized. War in Europe ended on May 7th, and Germany had surrendered to the allies. Americans wanted unconditional surrender, not with terms that could change the outcome after the war had finished though. Although that the bombs were dropped, there were many other options for Truman to consider doing to Japan. Like wait for the soviet army to enter the war, hold a demonstration of the power that the Japanese people could watch to see the destruction. These air strikes were designed to crush to resolve of the Japanese people, but this didn’t work out as they all stayed strong.

Many of the American scientists and politicians suggested to Truman that the bomb should not be use on the Japanese people without warning, but instead demonstrate the power of the atomic bomb to them. Before dropping the bombs, Truman sent a message to Japan saying this was their final chance to surrender and said that they only had to have unconditional surrender of their armed forces, but Japan ignored this threat. The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, but this still did not make the Japanese people surrender, and the second was dropped on Nagasaki.

The atomic bombs were inhumane

When the two bombs dropped by the US caused mass casualties, Many people lost their homes and even more lost their lives, families and friends.

When the first bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, roughly 70,000 to 135,000 people died and when the second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki over 60,000 people died and even more suffered from severe injuries from both.

The sheer severity of these bombs and the amount of radiation that came from them left even the children of those exposed with deformities even though they were born after the explosions.

Radiation blasts would lead to slow and agonising deaths

By the end of 1945, approximately 140,000 people had been murdered in Hiroshima, with another 74,000 died in Nagasaki. Several of the survivors would get leukaemia, cancer, or other devastating after effects from the radiation within the years that followed.

60 Japanese cities had already been destroyed by conventional bombing. Japan was therefore already defenceless and nearly defeated.

President Truman had other options in how to end the war

Innocent civilians, not the military servicemen were the main victims

America should have waited for surrender after the first bomb on Hiroshima

A demonstration of the bomb would have been enough to end the war

There was no likelihood of Japan winning the war at this stage in 1945
