The perfect example is the special education teacher that joins a core teacher. The two teachers will need to communicate what type of instruction will occur, the content, and how the responsibilities will be divided. It takes a great amount of cooperation, understanding, and willingness to be open to other teaching ideas. At this point, co-teaching is a skill this individual would need work on since she is no longer in the classroom, but believes the skills can be taught with experience. When consulting someone, an individual being consulted would need to have expertise in the matter at hand. When teachers consult, they could consult with different people such as special education teachers on techniques with a student or even a parent themselves to learn about a particular student. As a parent, consultation would include the ability to reach out to teachers and other professionals when they are struggling to understand a situation. Counselors are taught that when in doubt, consult another counselor with more expertise or a different view point. A counselor must have an open mind and be willing to ask for help when faced with difficult situations or clients. Barriers could include confidentiality, time to consult with another professional. Consultation occurs regularly in a school counselors day, whether it be consulting with an administrator or fellow professional. A counselor must be comfortable seeking assistance when needed. School building principals also consult with one another in various areas for advice or their opinion on a situation. When consulting with others, an individual should be receptive, engaging, and clear in the information they are sharing. Consultation can be affected by time and confidentiality. When educators engage in consultation, it seems as though they are looking for assistance and advice on new ideas, which is great for student.
