Pre Interview: Time Stops

I chose all of these pictures which include water because loss surrounds everyone like water surrounds. I also chose the ocean and flowing river because although when experiencing a death it can feel like life should stop but it continues to move. The steep rocks signify the climb people take when experiencing grief and loss and it can seem impossible to get over. I’m using a lot of symbolism in the first post because I’m not positive who I am going to interview yet but I am drawing these conclusions from people who I have talked to and from my own experience.

Something that really impacted me during the first interview was the idea of people hiding their emotions. There were two instances that we discussed during the interview of issues surrounding drug use and going to rehab. The families kept these issues very secret because they didn't want the public to know their sons struggles with drugs. In the end, one of her friends went off to college and ended up overdosing and wasn't found until days later when his friend went to knock on the door and it was locked. Someone ended up having to open that door to get to him.

After the second interview I think a lot of progress was made with our conversation and comfort level. Emily mentioned that she was used to hiding her emotions when it came to the grieving process but now she finds that talking to the right people helps her the most. We focused a lot on the death of her schoolmates and how at certain points she would think to herself "Is it okay for me to feel this way?" I selected this picture because it reminds me of how some people when talking about grieving will want to stop and not go onward to say more but Emily in the background went on to get to the brighter side. Emily also said one of her happiest places is the beach.

Post Interview #3: Wrapping Up, Opening New Doors

In interview 3, Emily and I talked about how much family has helped her through all of her grieving. From interview two to three, Emily's grandfather passed away. She was really close with him but his health had been declining and toward the end she said she was just waiting for the call from her parents. I have a picture of the open road with a curve in the road because in life you never know what you're going to be faced with. The importance of family is depicted in the picture of our families together on Junior Parent's Weekend. Our families are our anchors so it was awesome to get a picture of all of them, even if it's blurry. I wanted the final picture to be of the beach again with sun shining through the cloud to show a sense of hope, which Emily talked about in the third interview. She talked about this experience changing how she looks at life

1) These photos really track the progress of my interview. From the beginning, I was unsure of who I even wanted to interview and by the end of all three interviews I became much more comfortable talking and asking about grief. It was kind of crazy timing because Emily actually lost her 92 year-old grandpa between the second and third interview. These photos are both literal and symbolic. Through interviewing and following the process with photos post each interview, I was able to try to understand what she is going through and I am now much more comfortable talking to her and others about grief.
2) Everyone grieves differently. Through interviews, I was able to learn what helps Emily when she is grieving and it really opened my eyes to realizing that she needs different things than I do and that that's okay. There photos were taken both inside and outside and have a good variety. I started out with breach pictures and the waves crashing on the rocks which were formed this way. I ended with the calm picture of the waves and this could be a prime example of my emotions throughout this project. I chose the picture of the families all together on Junior Parents Weekend because Emily said the way she was able to manage getting through the loss of her grandpa was form the support of her family and friends.
3) All of my photos are ones that I took. All of these pictures include something that Emily mentioned helped her try to heal. The ocean made her feel at home, sometimes she needed to be alone in her room, her family and the support from her friends and family kept her sane. All of my pictures are touching, showing that this is an interlinked process, there aren't just certain times and places for grief, it is always around in some form or another.
