         <title>How Austin is addressing the thousands who miss school every year- Review</title>

         <description><![CDATA[I teach special education at an elementary school. This year I had a student who by December had missed 21 days of school. The principal told me I needed a plan to improve the student’s attendance. Central Texas is not the only school district dealing with chronic absenteeism. 
	The freshman’s quote in this article about him just feeling sick and not wanting to go to school is often a typical reason for poor attendance. Mentoring students who are chronically absent is a great idea. I discovered in the case of my chronically absent student a little attention and incentive can make a great difference. I talked to him about his absenteeism and offered a reward at the end of month if he improved. His goal was to not miss more than three days in 19 days of school. His reward he chose was beef jerky. I think what the student really liked was the attention I was giving him each day just for being present. He only missed four days the remaining of the year! 
	My Brother’s Keepers program is an excellent start in addressing the truancy issue. Negative school experiences are being replaced because the students know somebody at the school cares and pays attention if they are there or ]]></description>
