Ivan, Misha, Alik, Ivan's mom, and Auntie were at Ivan's house but then heard the plains above and had to cover the windows and get in the closet because they were under a bomb raid. They were all squishes in one small closet and this reminds me of when I was at my friends sleepover party and we were all playing hide and seek and me and 5 other people all hid in her closet and we were all really squished but also a little scared because we were playing in the dark. These two events were different because in Ivan's, he was in a life or death situation but I on the other hand was just playing hide and seek. Everyone was just hit with the bombs and Auntie has a hole in her roof so she is staying with Ivan and his mom. Ivan is at her house helping her get her things and she is telling him stories but then she did something with her bird cage that made a wall open and a gun and bullets were inside. Then she pulls the feet off of her table and there are rolls of cash under each one. Lastly she pries up the floor under a carpet and there is piles and piles of cans of beans. This reminded me of those escape room games that I've played. In the games, things like codes and keys are hidden in all sorts of places and you have to find them to escape. Ivan's mom is telling him that if her factory moves, than she has to move too and Ivan has to his Uncle Boris' and he doesn't really know him well. I can picture his sadness and anger because of the words that the author has Ivan sa. He said, "I practically jumped to my feet. 'I don't care what they say. I'm going with you!" In the beginning of the book after the bombs hit and the war started to get bad, Auntie said that people would soon start to get desperate for food and she was right. Ivan, Alik, and Misha were standing in line for their bread and a boy with a knife tried to take the ration cards of an older lady. Auntie's comment of people getting desperate and going mad was foreshadowing this event. She is very knowledgeable about wars because she lived through one so she is always prepared and ready for anything. If Ivan survives the war, I think he will become like Auntie too, ready to expect the unexpected. I don't think that Alik and Misha will survive because they don't have someone like Auntie to keep them alive. Ivan and Auntie are on their way to Lake Lagoon and Auntie gets red napkins out of her bag. She hands them to Ivan and tells him to put them in his pocket and keep them in case he falls off the car or gets lost in the snow so that he stands out and can be found. I predict that Ivan will get lost in the snow and will need these napkins to live. Auntie is always ready for whatever comes their way and Ivan can't make it without her, she is keeping him alive. Ivan, Auntie, and many more people are still on their way to Lake Lagoon but the car broke down and Auntie suggested that everyone walk the rest of the way. I predict that most people will come but some will stay because the driver, Yanik said that people will come and rescue them but Auntie knows that no one is coming. Ivan and Auntie were on their way in a sleigh with a man and three more men came to them and asked for food and a ride. Vladimir, the driver, gave them the little food he had left and towed them to where they needed to go. Ivan assumed they were partisans, undercover soldiers. I think that these man will help and save Russia from the Germans. Auntie asked her sister if she could stay and she said yes. Ivan was sleeping when a girl named Polina woke him up and told him that she was going sledding and he needed to come. She showed him around town and I think that either she likes him or she hasn't had a friend her own age in a while. The was isn't that bad where they are but things still aren't 100% good, many people have left town because of it. I think this because she was so eager to get him up and ready to have fun. I'm not really sure that likes him but I know that she is happy to have a friend because maybe all her friends left or maybe there were no kids her age at all.

2. A big secondary character id Auntie. She is taking care of Ivan now and is one of the main reasons that he is still alive. Another secondary character is Polina. At first I just thought that she was just a girl that wanted a friend but I now know that she is a partisan too and has "recruited" Ivan.
3. The overall problem in my book is the war. It isn't getting better and it's really impacting everything.
4. Ivan is trying to help stop the war by becoming a partisan, basically an undercover "spy".
5. I really like the book so far. I like how unexpected everything is like the bombs in Leningrad and Auntie's crazy house and Polina being a partisan, I can't wait to see whats next!
6. I don't really like how Ivan had to leave his mom and friends. Ivan and Polina are chopping wood and a man named Petr comes and is talking to Polina but notices Ivan and asked him what he's heard. Ivan put it all together and realized that they were both partisans and asks to join them. I think that was a bad choice because partisans are not treated well by the Germans if they are found. I am also very surprised that Polina is a partisans because before, she just acted like an innocent girl who wanted friends but maybe that was just her cover. They are not her real aunt and uncle, Dorthy was an orphan before she was "adopted". She was picked up in her house in a tornado and taken to Oz where she wears a blue and white checkered dress. She has a black little dog named Toto, he is her best friend.
Secondary Character(s):
1. Scarecrow. He is the first friend that Dorthy meets. He is a straw stuffed scarecrow who doesn't have a brain. Dorthy meats him when she saw him on his pole and he winked at her. She took him down and he told her how he wants a brain so he can know how to do things.
2. Tin man. He is the second person they meat. Scarecrow and Dorthy see him while they are in the woods and hear him groan. He was all rusted because the Wicked Which of the East turned him to tin and stopped him from loving the girl he loved.
3. Lion. He was the last friend to meat Dorthy. The three were walking and heard him roar. He tried to eat Toto and Dorthy called him a coward and he agreed. He is joining them to ask the Wizard for some courage.
POV: 3rd person
Setting: The first chapter takes place in Dorthy's house in Kansas. Then she and her house are lifted up in a tornado and taken to Oz. For the majority of they book, they are on their journey to The Emerald City
Interesting Noticing: At the very beginning of the story in Kansas, Dorthy says how gray Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are, how the joy has been sucked out of them. I connected that to how in the movie, when she is in Kansas, the whole movie is gray like she described and once her a Toto arrive is Oz, a new color is breathed into her life.

Character Name: Tin Woodman
Claim: Even though it is said many times that the Tin Woodman doesn't have a heart, he shows characteristics that would be found in someone who does.
Evidence/Data:
1. He saw a wildcat trying to eat a mouse and chopped the wildcat's head off and saved what turned out to be the Queen of the Mice. (Baum 59)
2. He has made the group a boat and a truck without a second thought. (Baum 61 and 49)
3. He said he would cry if the lion were to kill anything. (Baum 43)
Warrant: Even though the Tin Woodman doesn't have a heart, he has done many actions that show otherwise. As stated in the text, a wildcat was trying to eat a poor little mouse so he chopped it's head off and saved the Queen of the Mice (Baum 59). He had the heart to save the mouse when most people would just run from the wildcat, he stayed to help the creature. Another example of his heart is on page 43. The Lion offers to kill them some dinner but the Tin Man replies, "Don't, please don't, for I should certainly weep if you do." He has sympathy for other living things, just like someone with a heart. Lastly, on pages 49 and 61, he is asked to make a truck and a raft out of wood and he says yes blindly. He doesn't even need to think about how hard it will be or if he can even do it. All he wants to do is help his friends. Even though it is said many times that the Tin Woodman doesn't have a heart, his actions say otherwise.

2. Dad. He is a state senate member and makes lots of money. Taylor thought that since he had this position that he could get her out of the reason she was expelled so she took the fall.
POV:
Setting: Hundred Oaks School. Taylor used to go to St. Andrews, a very good private school. Most of the book is taking place at Hundred Oaks, public school because she got expelled from her private school because her ex boyfriend had drugs and she covered for him because he was at the school on a scholar ship.
Interesting Noticing: Taylor is trying to stay away from boys and dating because she thinks she will only get hurt more. She has been temped a few times but most recently with her brother's best friend. She doesn't want a relationship though. Her dad is a state senate and they live in a huge house because of all the money he makes. Although he is rich, he wants his kids to work for what the earn.
