Group Members: Calvin Chu, Javed Jokhai, Natasha Moeslinger, Nicholas Siauw
1) The doctor should respect the patient's confidentiality because everyone should have a right to personal privacy. A medical confidential relationship is what develops trust between a patient and his/her physician.
2) Breaking patient confidentiality should only be acceptable when it is done to prevent serious harm to the patient in question or other people. Otherwise, it should only be broken when legally required.
3) The patient should be informed if the doctor shares his results because it wold be unprofessional to share them without his knowing, much less without his consent. A patient wouldn't want to be left in the dark about his own medical information.
4) The patient technically owns the results as they pertain to him. However, the physician also owns a share of the information as their relationship is built on the patient's trust of the physician.

Animal Testing Poster

Group Members: Zi Han (Crystal Liu), Chloe Au, Samina Zaman, Tasnim Ibnat, Stefany Quiroz

Q1: The use of animal research can be justified to save ourselves only if the effectiveness of such research is deemed at least 90% probable. This is due to the fact that animal research has had a vital role in many scientific and medical advances of the past century and continues to aid our understanding of various diseases. People now enjoy a better quality of life because of these advances, and the subsequent development of new medicines and treatment, all made possible by animal research.

Q2: Society, specifically government official, should step in and intervene when animals are being tortured for research. Animals should not be put in any harmful situations where research becomes meaningless. There must be a scientific reason for their testing, and if there is a lack of such, then government officials should put more restriction on such testings.

Q3: Animal rights are the belief that animals have a right to be free of human use and exploitation. However, this does not mean that animal rights are about putting animals above humans or giving animals the same rights as humans. For example, no one wants cats to have the right to vote or dogs the right to bear arms.

Q4: Animal testing is useful in enhancing our knowedge of both humans and animals through basic biological research and understanding how living things work. Specifically, through animal testing, we can develop and test potential forms of treatment about particular diseases. For example, medicines for Parkinson’s disease have been developed using animal models with induced Parkinson’s-like symptoms. Data from these studies allowed new targets of disease intervention to be identified. From there, new therapeutic techniques and surgical procedures have been introduced and can now be tested on human patients.
