Mama's Plant - symbol of Mama's children and especially grandchildren

- " In the beginning of the play, mama's plant is "a feeble little plant growing doggedly in a small pot on the windowsill.'" Doggedly implies that the plant is growing under difficult circumstances to withstand but it is still managing. The fact that it is growing on the windowsill shows that I could not possibly have enough light to grow properly and has a small pot, restrictiing root growth. This symbolises her kin, especially Travis, who has the living room for his bedroom and can't get 50 cents from his mother.

"She feels the dirt and puts it back out' is even more worrying. She felt the dirt to see if it was still wet and had enough water, which would suggest that the plant is not watered on a regular basis instead, only when the plant really needs it. That would hint the same for Travis (he did not get the 50 cents (from his mother) as it was not mandatory)

Later, when the family is packing and Bobo delivers the bad news, she replaces the plant outside with intention to cancel the move. The old house doesn't let the plant nor Travis grow properly.
"She goes to her plant, which has remained on the table, looks at it, picks it up and takes it to the windowsill and sits it outside, and she stands and looks at it a long moment. Then she closes the window"

In the final scene, when the move is finally confirmed, Mama is the last onstage with he plant on the table. "The door opens and she comes back in, grabs her plant, and goes out for the last time". her bringing of the plant shows that Travis and his sibling, will slowly but surely grow and live better lives.
More Quotes:
- Bottom of page 39
- First paragraph page 40
- " (Looking at her plant and sprinkling a little water on it) They spirited all right, my children. Got to admit they got spirit—Bennie and Walter. Like this little old plant that ain’t never had enough sunshine or nothing—and look at it …" Page 52 last paragraph
- MAMA: "It expresses ME!" (talking about the plant - page 121
- Top of page 139
- Middle of 139 "Lord have mercy, where is my plant?"
- Last page (151)

The playwright uses the physical setting of the house and neighborhood to create sympathy amongst the audience in order to aid with the delivery of her intention which is to portray the despair and poverty faced by the individuals living in these African-American neighborhoods and she successfully manages to do so by emphasizing on how the physical setting of the house/neighborhood is what has given birth to those aspirations/hopes and what theses hopes/dreams which symbolise the poverty and the desperation in wanting to believe in the promise of a better life and this contributes to the playwright's intention which is also to show the audience how the setting is what drives the flaw in each of the characters as it creates a division between the poor and the rich, it is symbol for inequality and it is what leads to people hoping for money/greed more than the dream of freedom itself characterising how the american has changed and has lost it's innocence

eggs - For the playwright, Ruth is ‘reality’ whereas Walter Jr is dreaming. For Walter, this illustrates how women keep men from achieving their goals/every time a man gets excited about something, a way to quiet their temper, represents an acceptance of adversity that the youngers face, and a mechanical approach to supporting him.

However, wanting to achieve the American Dream is no crime. In fact, it is simply a human thing to do
