My name is Madiha Sayani. I'm an independent monitoring and evaluation consultant currently based in Karachi, Pakistan. Over the last few years I've had the opportunity to work on the evaluations of several education interventions, including a couple of programs that worked on introducing play-based education in K-2 in low-cost schools. We struggled mightily during these evaluations to accurately understand children's experiences. We tried to dabble a little in arts-based methods but since we didn't have the expertise to execute them, we ended up using very traditional, linear data collection instruments to engage children. Recently, I've become more interested in incorporating the lenses of intersectionality, social justice and equity in evaluation. I registered in this course with the objective of developing a better understanding of how we can use creative research methods not only to include the perspective of populations that we can't cater to using traditional methods, but also to learn how to include them in the research design process as well. My name is Nicola Mannion. I am a 3rd year Ph.D student, in Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick, Ireland. I am also a lecturer in Inclusive and Special Education and I am the acting co-ordinator of the Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education (PGDSE) in MIC. My research explores the experiences and perspectives of students with ID in mainstream post-primary schools in the Irish context. I am using Photovoice as my main method of data collection. I choose this method as I hope that it will overcome some of the ethical and methodological challenges of researching with children particularly children with intellectual disabilities. My research is underpinned by Lundy's Model of Participation which supports students to have the space, voice, audience and influence to express their views and have their voices heard. A transformative paradigm was adopted in this study as it allows me the researcher to address issues of social justice through the promotion of change led by participants for participants. Importantly, this paradigm allows me the address the power imbalance which can results when researching with marginalised groups. I am starting Data Collection in schools shortly.
