Georg eventually changes his mind and accepts the friendly gesture. And both men realized that nothing good comes out of continuing to waste their efforts and energy towards hating Georg. They did not want to continue to conflict past three generations over a small strip of land that eventually led to their demise. In this sense, Ulrich is offering to start from a clean slate and resolve their quarrel. At the beginning of The Interlopers, he and Georg are sworn enemies; they despise each other. They can't stop quarreling and constantly wish for the other's downfall.  However, at this point in the story Ulrich now wants to help Georg (possibly risking his own safety), which is something he would not have done before.
