Starr is singing about the Vietnam War and how he doesn't appreciate the fact that fighting takes people's lives. Thoreau was not a supporter of the Mexican-American war because of the same reason, so he did not pay his taxes. So, we see a comparison between the two by the way they hated war and how they both resisted. Edwin sings "it ain't nothing but a heart breaker

It is almost like he is "on top the world" and has succeeded in separating himself and finally feels free. Pierce calls himself a "New England Transcendentalist" for a very good reason. He grew up with transcendentalistic ties from family and friends. One of these people included Emerson. Since he was surrounded by these abnormal ideas as a child, he grew up with an idea of how to support them. They are charging people to view something that should be free. In episode 36, "Dealing with Inner Disturbance," Nathan expresses how he was on a trip and felt unbalanced emotionally and mentally. He was unbalanced due to not listening to his inner voice. This supports the transcendentalist idea of intuition. It is very evident that they shared this in this quote by Thoreau: "It is better to have your head in the clouds, and know where you are... than to breathe the clearer atmosphere below them, and think that you are in paradise." He is saying that it is better to have your own ideas rather than following what everyone else does. People can trick you into telling you what is "correct" when you should follow your own path. Society can view you as crazy for this, but if you believe in it, then that's all that matters.
