Name of the activity: Back push

Name of the early childhood Educator: Miss Margaret Nganga.

Developmental Domain: Physical Domain.

Age group: 4-5 Years.

      OVERVIEW

Back push is an Inuit game and in this game, both opponents sit on the floor with backs together. They place their right hand on floor between legs and the left hand on the outside of the left leg.Knees are bent with feet flat on the floor. A circle or a line is marked where the one pushed out of the marked area becomes a looser.Using leg, arm and body strength opponents try to push each other out of the marked area.

         MATERIALS

Carpet

Scarfs

       MATERIAL PREPARATION

-avail the game materials at the venue of the game(classroom)

-ask children to do clean up of any other play materials.

-vacuum the carpet to ensure there is no hard objects like small rocks.

-create enough space for the game.

STEP- BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE GAME

-both opponents sit on the floor with backs together.

-place right hand on the floor between legs and the left hand on the outside of the left leg.

-knees are bent with feet flat on the floor.

-mark lines on either end with the scarfs.

-using leg, arm and body strength opponents try to push each other over the marked area.

-three tries are given, one try with right hand between legs, one with left hand between legs and the third try ,if a tie will be Eastern style with both hands outside legs.

-looser’s foot has to go outside the scarf.

    CONCLUSION

In pairs let children play the game.Ensure their strengths is parallel so as not to disadvantage any of them.Supervise the children to ensure their safety.

   REFLECTION

1 The boys had fun but the girls showed no much interest.

2 The players tried hard to push their opponent outside the scarf and they had a lot of fun.

3 The players kept breaking the rules and they needed to be reminded oftenly. They could not wait for a pair to be given at least 3 tries. The scarf didn’t work well, they kept pushing it with their feet.

4 To do it differently, a larger space would be good where all children can do the activity at the same time.Have a firm mark ,like draw a bold line using a marker instead of a scarf.Encourage the children to play the game for fun and not for competition.I should have demonstrated with my colleague Educator first.

5 I was surprised to see that some children were very good at the game.I thought that it was an adults’ game.

This game is inspired by Inuit traditional crawling games , NAME OF EDUCATOR. GLORY DEVELOPMENTAL DOMAIN.

Children will practice motor skills and practicing in fun ,they are introduced to Inuit way of life through movement and story telling. AGE GROUP. 3 -5 YEARS. OVERVIEW. MATERIALS USED. Mats or soft floor surface.Stuffed animal [eg seal] or printed picture. Inuit cultural book could be used from the beginning to introduce the game. MATERIAL PREPARATION. Use cotton or any soft material to stuff the seal animal to be used, use a toy seal animal. And an Inuit cultural story book. STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS. Gather children in a circle . Show them a picture of a seal ,and explain briefly. In Northern territories Inuit children watch and learn from different animals like the seal. DEMONSTRATION. Show children how to do a seal crawl. Lie on your tummy. Keep legs together and straight, like a seal’s tail. Use your arms to pull forward without using your knees or feet. FOR AN ACTIVITY. Children took turns to crawl like a seal after demonstration on the mat or soft floor. To make the game fun ,I cut papers like fish for them to try to catch . I cheered the children up with claps and words like GOOD JOB. HOW DID IT GO? After trying the seal crawl activity with the children ,it went very well ,the children were excited to try crawling like a seal, after watching the teacher crawl and seeing pictures of the seal. They were all engaged and waited for their turns to participate .The physical aspect of the game was so fun as the children loved moving around and pretending to be animals. The photo of the seal and toy spark the imagination .this game Fostered team work as the they cheered and encouraged their friends while waiting to take their turns.

WHAT DID NOT GO WELL. A few children including myself found it so difficult to crawl using just the arms and got frustrated.we encouraged them to keep trying and made necessary adjustment of their movements. Within the activity children got so excited and became very noisy. WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT ? Yes next time since I have just few children I will like them to take individual turns so as to allow time for each child to go through and learn the tricks of the game. DID ANYTHING SURPRISE YOU? Yes how much the children connected with the idea of Arctic animals .some started making seal sounds.

Name of activity: Rabbit Hop

Name of educator: Freda

Developmental Domain: Physical domain

Age group: 2 -3 years old

Overview: Rabbit hop is one of the Inuit game that is fun for kids to do. They love to bounce and hop around like little rabbits using their energy in a fun and playful way.

Material preparation:

- Open space

- Tape to mark start and finish line

Steps and Instructions:

Children will gather near the start line.

Educator will model how a rabbit hops. Thrusting body forward, put both hands on the floor in front of you and hop into squat position until you reach the finish line. You must land on two feet.

Now, Line children up behind the start line

“Ready, Set. Hop!”

First to reach the finish line wins.

Closing:

Slow down and rest like tired bunnies. Ask the children questions: Did you have fun hopping? Was it too hard? How does tired rabbit look like?.

Reflection:

The activity went pretty well with the help of my co-educator. It was a little challenging to start because gathering children in same spot is hard. When I showed them how to do it, everybody started hopping everywhere. I have to call everybody’s attention to stand behind the start line, then they keep hoping and jumping even after the activity. This surprised me how much energy their little bodies have.

But with all the chaos, the game was fun and engaging activity for toddlers and preschoolers. The children showed excitement. It was fun to see them laughing, interacting and enjoying active play together. This activity also supported gross motor development. Next time, I will incorporate the use of music to make it even more enjoyable.

Educator: Langa

Developmental Domain: gross motor skills, they will be using the leg and arm muscles and core muscles and also helps in cognitive development by listening to instructions and applying them to the game.

Age Group- 2-6yrs

Overview: this game focuses on the leg and it needs trust and the team to work together. This encourages the kids to build team work thus allowing kids to bond while having fun. This is low impact game.

Material: yoga stretch band

Made sure there is enough material for the kids to be able to work in pairs.

Step by step Instructions:

Kids were gathered in a circle and we sung a few songs to get everyone’s attention and settled. We spoke about games and they got to listen to their favourites and after I introduced the new game. This kids were paired according to and about campatability. After they were asked to sit with legs out feet facing the partners, they when everyone was in positions I aske them to bend on leg and leave one touching the friends foot. Then I gave out the band and showed them how to position them and to wait for further instruction. I then showed the how the game is played by paring with one of the kids. When everyone was in place/ position and gave a start signal to pull backwards as shown or said.

Closing.

It was a very exciting game for the kids but they were easily discouraged if they didn’t get it the first time and we had to play it few times. Being a mixed group it was difficult to monitor the babies while encouraging the preschoolers to keep playing and to focus on the fun part instead of winning. At the end when we’re all having a blast and some ended up playing in 3s saying they are making a triangle. I could have planned games for the infants that way they will not have been in the way of big guys but some infants ended up cheering for the teams. They surprised me by asking for more games we ended up doing side reach and arm twist.

What did not go well, I think is only in the beginning.Only struggle for kids is how to execute the bending of the knee and hop. Maybe ,next time I will ask another colleague to come with me to help manage the game. What surprised me, the kids really liked the game. They keep asking me to play more and do it the next day again.
