They are formed by a variety of weather and geological phenomena including water deposits, ice, wind, erosion, and even lava. Plains make excellent agricultural ground in many places because of their rich soil and their relatively flat landscape. The plains usually meet the oceans or seas, these are called Coastal plains. Some plains are formed by the action of rivers, these are called River plains. River plains are very fertile and good for growing crops. You will find most big cities are located in plains. This is because it is easier to build houses, buildings, roads and other structures in the plains. Hill is a highland of much lower elevation than a mountain. Normally it is not as steep as a mountain. The surface of a hill is much more stable than that of a dune. The temperature of the desert can be hot or cold. A lot of times the rocks in the deserts are unusually shaped by the high speed winds that carries sand along with it. Over a period of time wind wears away the rocks into strange shapes. Plants and animals in the desert cope up with the extreme dry conditions in their own unique ways. Plants store water in their leaves, roots and stems. Also most of them have small, spiky leaves so as to minimize the evaporation of water. Plateaus are classified according to their surrounding environment as intermontane, piedmont, or continental.
