Subject: Lack of microwave installation in Crawford building

Background:

A significant number of students have expressed the need for a microwave facility within the Crawford building, particularly for the purpose of heating their meals during the lunch break. However, it is worth noting that currently, no microwave is available within the Crawford building.

Solution:

Due to the upcoming reconstruction plan for the Crawford Building, the university has chosen to exercise caution with substantial investments in the existing facilities of the Crawford Building. This circumstance makes the immediate installation of a microwave within the Crawford building somewhat impractical.

However, an alternative option is available mini kitchen area located on the fifth floor of the Matthew Building. This mini kitchen features both a microwave and a kettle, providing students with a convenient solution for heating their meals.

This issue was raised in the Liaison Committee Meeting on 18/10/23 and the DJCAD Staff is considering having microwaves installed in either the DJCAD library or the canteen.

Subject: Microwave Installation Update

Background:

Several students have expressed concerns regarding limited access to the kitchen in the Matthew Building due to ongoing lectures and tutorials. This situation raises apprehensions about the feasibility of accommodating students from both buildings in a single microwave, particularly given the significantly higher number of students enrolled at DJCAD this year.

Solution:

The matter has been brought to the attention of the Student President, who is currently liaising with cafeteria staff to arrange for the installation of multiple microwaves. These microwaves should be in the cafeteria before Christmas, or else the class reps will do a campaign about this to the principal.

Additionally, there is a consideration to place a microwave in the DJCAD Library; however, this is pending approval, as staff are collaborating with the Health and Safety Manager to address potential safety concerns. It's worth noting that a microwave was present in the cafeteria last year, as informed by the L3 Class Reps, but it was damaged and resulted in an explosion.

Subject: Riso Printers being removed from Printing Hub

Background:

The issue regarding the relocation of the Riso printers from the Printing Hub to the Printing Unit has been brought to our attention by the Level 3 Class Representatives. The transfer of these printers to the Printing Unit has resulted in a notable change in accessibility and availability. Regrettably, the Riso printers are no longer readily accessible to students free of charge. Access to these printers is now restricted, with students only able to utilize them during a limited time frame on Friday mornings.

This shift in accessibility presents significant challenges, particularly for students in the Communication Design program who rely on these printers to produce artwork with vibrant colours. Conventional printers available on campus do not possess the capability to reproduce the same level of vibrancy that the Riso printers offer, making this a substantial hindrance for students seeking to achieve specific aesthetic outcomes.

Solution:

Level 3 Class Representatives are planning to talk to Level 4 Class Representatives and Class Representatives in the Illustration Department to inform them about the issue initially.

After that, the related Class Representatives will schedule a meeting with the Head of the Communication Design Department to discuss the issue of bringing back the Riso Printers to the Printing Hub and making them free of charge to students.

Further information about the Riso Printers issue will be updated weekly and students will be informed by their Class Representatives about the status of the issue.
