  • Could try and create an intervention between older people and young people where they share views and try and build rapport to increase feelings of safety (reduce provocation – not sure?)

  • Patrolling the area as a form of formal surveillance (increase risk) 
  • More lighting to ensure individuals feel more exposed, rather than hidden in darkness and able to commit crimes (increase risk) 
Unemployment within the community  
  • Jobs could be created by starting patrols of areas and getting the youth clubs up and running. This could reduce crime by potentially giving people an income that otherwise did not have one, or occupying individuals so this would not be committed out of boredom (removing excuses) 
  • As the neighbourhood is quite a way from the city centre, increasing public transport may be necessary to ensure safe ways of getting to and from the amenities, which could also create jobs.

Shoplifting

  • As it is close to the school there is a chance it could be the school children/parents shoplifting. Due to the large proportion of unemployment and one parent families, it could be that the children/parents are shoplifting to provide food as it cannot be afforded. Therefore, having free school meals for disadvantages families could help prevent this. Or if free school meals are already implemented, the school should make sure that all families are aware of this scheme, through information leaflets being handed out to children and parents. Young people hanging around in the evening, suspected to be drinking/using drugs 

  • Have police talks in schools about the dangers of underage drinking and taking drugs, emphasising the illegality of this act (removing excuses)
  • Improve public transport routes to and from Greyville, socially at night, as the young people bored and turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to alleviate this. If there was better public transport they could head to places with more activities, such as bowling or ice skating (reducing excuses)
  • Due to the large number of young families, a youth club could be run to keep the youth occupied (reducing excuses)

Joyriding 

  • Install speed reminder signs (E.g., if the speed limit is 30mph, it will tell you to slow down if you have exceeded this). (Removing excuses)
  • Due to the large amount of families install signs that say “kill you speed, not our children” to try and evoke feelings of guilt (remove excuses)

Older residents are becoming fearful, as there have been reports of street taunting of older people.
  • To build relations between the young and old, the school could set up “tea and chat” afternoons, whereby the children/students volunteer to make the older residents a hot drink and sit down and have a chat with them. This will allow the young people to respect the older people in their community more. Also giving the young people a sense of purpose through the after school activities can help prevent crime that may have been caused due to boredom.

With the burglaries being described as frequent, it might be possible for the local police force to start creating a timeline for said crimes and it may be possible for them to 'predict' when the next burglaries might occur and for a police force to be present in areas that might be targeted, they might deter possible offenders from committing their crime. In the mean time, it would be useful to install or re-activate CCTV within the area, both outside and inside, to make prosecution easier for courts, which may also deter prospective criminals due to how 'easily' they could be caught. As for domestic burglary, it would be useful for the police force to start patrolling local areas within the daytime to assure the older residents of their presence and also to encourage people to lock windows and doors overnight and possibly leaving lights on when they are out to feign occupancy within homes, if families are able to do so.
Shop-Lifting
With CCTV being installed within shops it could be easier for shop owners and attendants to catch those who are shoplifting, though the solution cannot be just to rely on human effect as there would be moments that could be missed by shop attendants. As it has already been identified that shoplifting is quite prevalent in the area close to the school possibly conducting a talk within the school over the effects of shoplifting and possible light punishment to be implemented such as detention for those who have been caught shoplifting. Small punishments like that ,however, do not concern themselves with the possible root issue of why children might be shoplifting. Especially if shoplifting items of food, the school should possibly implement free school meals for those who may be going hungry as Greyville is an identified area of low income as well as one parent families.
Drug usage and Vandalism    
As it has been identified that it is young people taking part in drug usage and vandalism, talks within educational buildings would be useful to open younger peoples eyes up to the effects of drugs and alcohol on their bodies and what it could do to the rest of their lives, possibly bringing in a recovered drug/alcohol addict to bring in the real life story of what their addiction did to their lives and how they overcame it. Offering a real life story rather than a subjective one to younger people can be more impactful as they will see this person in front of them and possibly be inspired by their resilience.
As for vandalism, the use of CCTV would be useful again to possibly catch those who have vandalised community buildings as well as those who are attempting to commit arson
Joyriding
Joyriding can be counteracted with the youth of speed cameras along long structures of straight road as they are areas typically used, if those who are joyriding have used a fake plates and are photographed by the speed camera in the UK police force already have implementations in to counteract this such as ANPR, additionally due to the growing familial aspect of Greyville, speed bumps can be installed in school areas and roads close to the school as well as signs reminding drivers that speeding could possibly kill children or elderly individuals.
Growing Fear in the Older Community
With police presence already being implemented to deter individuals from committing a crime, they can also restore faith in the older community that the police are still around to deal with any issue that could arise. Additionally with the fact that there is a growing epidemic of loneliness within older individuals, setting up groups such as clubs or tea groups will help bring the community back together, giving them company and possibly an area to speak of their worries about the community, be at with other older individuals or possibly with community workers or police officers/PCOS. What measures need to be taken?
- High-security padlocks could be installed in shops, schools and the industrial area to increase the effort of burglary and shoplifting.
- CCTV could be installed inside and outside shops, schools and the industrial area to increase the effort and risk of all offences.
- Residents could be encouraged to install domestic CCTV systems and burglar alarms to increase the effort and risk of domestic burglary.
- Rapid repair of the vandalism to the shops, schools and industrial area will reduce provocation by evidencing order and community care.
- Speed prevention techniques, such as speed bumps, speed cameras and speed displays, could reduce joyriding by increasing effort, risk and physical barriers.
- Drug and alcohol abuse could be addressed by controlling who they're sold to, breathalysers in the local pubs and police foot patrol.
- Posters addressing all offences could be placed around Greyville to alert potential offender conscience.
- The facilities and the staffing of the youth club, as well as public transport, could be improved to remove excuses of boredom from the young offenders.
- A careers hub could be built to address unemployment in the area.
- A neighbourhood watch programme could be introduced to the area to reduce crime through social cohesion and territoriality.

Evidence that this plan would succeed?
- The majority of these measures are proposed by Clark and Eck (2005), who outlined 25 techniques of situational crime prevention. These techniques are directed at specific forms of crime and increase the difficulty and risk of offending.
- The effectiveness of rapid repair of vandalism is supported by the Broken Windows Theory (Kellig & Wilson, 1982), which suggests that if a window is broken and left unrepaired, further vandalism is likely to occur.
- Police foot patrol of minor crimes, like vandalism and public drinking, is thought to further reduce more serious crimes; this is often referred to as 'zero tolerance policing' (Bratton, 1990).

Vandalism / anti social behaviour from youths
- Education to youths as to what they are doing is wrong and the consequences 
- Opening youth centres to allow them to have somewhere to go rather than being on the street, this will help the elderly feel less intimidated
- Having more patrols in areas which are normally full of younger people and having police talk to them about what other areas they could go to and what they could put their energy into instead. However, this could make them become aggressive towards the officers so needs to be done with caution 
Joyriding 
- Education on what joyriding is 
- Better CCTV in the area to show the individuals that they are being watched and that they know the consequences
