Greece hosts a large number of fauna and flora species . Also, due to the rich diversity of features like high mountains, extensive coastline, big presence of islands (around 6.000) and great range of climatic and geomorphological conditions, it is obvious that it is an important biodiversity hotspot area. Greece has a total area of 131.957 km2 and an extensive coastline of about 15.000 km in length. It is one of the richest biodiversity countries of the Europe because more than 6.000 taxa of vascular plants and about 130,000-50,000 invertebrates are recorded in Greece. Moreover, the number of mammal, marine and freshwater species is also high.
B. Greece contains a large endemic catalogue by taking account of these estimations and the geographical and geological setting. The Greek ecosystem is affected by human activities. The major problems are being created by the urbanization, soil degradation or even land-use change. Also, the wildfires are a big environmental damage of our ecosystem. The impacts of this specific human activity are significant and can lead to a big ecosystem degradation. 
Due to the outstanding biodiversity of Greece, many of the areas are under protection by National Parks. Each of them consists of a core and the area surrounding it. So the National parks help in the preservation of Greek biodiversity and protect most of the treatened areas from the intense human presence and/or activities.
D. Greece is located between the European and African tectonic plates. Despite its small surface area, Greece has a rich and diversified natural environment, with unique geomorphology. The country contains active and extinct volcanoes such as Nea Kameni and Kolumbo in Santorini, Methana, Sousaki and many others. In addition, Greece consists of numerous mountains such as Olympus, Smolikas, Gramos, Parnassus, Chelmos and many others. Geologically, Greece is a highly structually complex country.
