I picked this portrait of Sor Juana Ines for my feminist timeline because of her work title “On Men’s Hypocrisy”, which we read in class. It’s about the position that women held in colonial Mexico and how they were expected to put up with harm from men. She writes about how all the suffering’s women face at the hands of men are written off because they are women. She became a nun in order to pursue her art and education, which was a freer alternative to marriage.

Maria Izquierdo was a female artist as well as a single mother to 3 children. She rejected political art that was prevalent at the time and instead looked to paint about her own identity as a Mexican woman and mother. She was blocked by male colleagues from receiving a mural commission despite being a finalist, and has since fallen almost completely off the map. She was an artist whose career was attacked because she was a woman and therefore called unfit to be a famous artist.

Frida Kahlo is one of the most well known Feminist painters known for her talent and tumultuous relationship with painter Diego Rivera. In this painting that was done after the divorce she wears a painful thorn necklace, but seems unwavered by the pain. The feminist aspect is in the unibrow and mustache that are on her face. The reason Kahlo was such a feminist icon was because she did not bend to beauty ideals, she poainted herself as she was or as she wanted to be seen, not giving into the male gaze.

Teresa Burga is an artist from Peru who has been making pop style pieces for the last 60 years. She questions the way that female form is presented as a way of political activism. She makes fun of the sexist portrayal of unrealistic women that were popular in the 60’s. She also does research based pieces on the way Peruvian women are represented vs. how they actually exist.

She has a neutral color palette and uses abstract contouring. Her pieces are of the female anatomy and seek to sensualize it.

Another popular feminist artist selected is Ana Mendieta. In these images she sports a mustache, which much like Frida Kahlo's works, fights against the male gaze and European beauty standards forced on women as the way they “should” look. She used her body and the earth in much of her art as a way of showing female sensuality and the connection to Earth. She also used art to fight against domestic violence and rape, however these images are not included due to the graphic nature.
