The Ten Commandments came from God who carved them with his own finger, according to the holy script, and sent Moses back to the Israelites (or Jewish) to relay these commandments along with many other rules and regulations.

Often when this question is really addressed answers are commonly that the Israelite society, recently brough out of captivity, simply needed a basic set of laws to follow in order to keep from falling apart, or that God was sick of them messing up and wanted to give His people a clear outline of His expectations for them. However, a deeper analysis of the Old Testament's Exodus reveals that the Ten Commandments were far more than a simple set of rules. According to the book, God set the commandments up as a covenant to His people and to create a model for an impressive society. The Israelites were given those commandments so they knew exactly what God expected of them - if they did their best to follow them God would hold up his end of the bargain by keeping them safe from sickness, giving them healthy children, and making sure their crops were bountiful, among many other things. Undoubtedly, because the list of commandments the Lord had given them were all moral laws, it was incredibly easy for them to break the laws and impossible for them to live life without doing so.
