I am in my final semester of the Professional School Counseling Program at Angelo State University. As an educator in the district where I work, I have heard the phrase, “I am being bullied” or “My child is being bullied, and no one has ever done anything about it” more times than I can count. While those phrases are certainly something that should always be taken seriously, many times students, parents, and educators do not always know if actual bullying has occurred. 

 I chose this topic because more stakeholders must be aware of what laws specifically state regarding bullying and what it entails. The word "bullying" gets thrown around too easily and many times, incorrectly. The more awareness we bring to the topic, the better-informed people can become.

Oftentimes, teachers, staff, and students are educated about the signs of bullying, who they should report to, and things they can do to stop bullying, which is important. However, explaining the more specific details of what bullying entails, in more user-friendly terms, could help to minimize the overuse of the term "bullying" so that it does not lose its importance. 

2.) Some of the emerging issues that impact the role of a school counselor that are related to bullying include:

-Overuse of the term “bullying” which minimizes the true severity of the word as specified by state law.
-Indifference because of the overuse of the term “bullying” which leads to a lack of action when true “bullying” has occurred.
-Confusion in knowing what bullying is, what signs to look out for, and what someone should do should they find themselves in a bullying situation.

In this blog, the author focuses on the identification and prevention of cyberbullying to create a kinder online community. By providing users with online Kindness Reminders of social media norms prior to posting content, there is more mindful consideration.

Schoolwide Bullying Prevention

--Actionless education and activities leave students feeling as though they are going through the motions when it comes to bullying education and awareness.
--The effects of bullying are far-reaching and long-lasting for students mentally and academically.
--Students need an all-hands-on-deck approach to bullying for there to be real buy-in to school-wide initiatives. 
--Teaching empathy, having honest conversations, involvement of all stakeholders, and utilizing quality teaching practices opens the doors for students to feel comfortable standing up and speaking out for themselves and others.
