Brendan Lyons: Thesis 1: Johnny is the glue that holds the gang together, without Johnny, there is chaos in the gang and everything falls apart.

Topic 1: In the book, the gang says that Johnny is there pet and he is crucial for the gang to be together.

Quote 1: "He was the gangs pet, everyone's kid brother. His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him, except when she hacked off at something, and then you could hear her yelling at him clear down at our house" (12).

Explanation: In other words, Johnny was treated very badly in his past and was hurt by lots of people. In this case, the gang has to be careful when talking to him and not upset him or remind him of his past and his parents. Even if that was enough, he got jumped by some Socs and was very hurt by them. So now, he was hurt by his parents and the Socs, which adds to his fears.

Quote 2: "'Damnit Johnny...' he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. 'Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die...' He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall" (149).

Explanation: In other words, when Johnny died, the glue that held the gang together disappeared and the gang fell apart and messed things up a lot. People loved Johnny and when he died, they were really hurt and changed by it. For example, Pony started being different and being less responsible, Dally was mad and wanted to die, and all together they were torn.

Topic 2: No one hits Johnny, and they keep him safe because he has been jumped before and his parents treat him badly.

Quote 1: "Johnny was breathing heavily and I noticed he was staring at the soc's hand. He was wearing three heavy rings. I looked quickly at Johnny, and idea dawning on me. I remembered that it was a blue mustang that had pulled up beside the vacant lot and that Johnny's face had been cut up by someone wearing rings" (44).

Explanation: In other words, Johnny was really scared at that time because those Soc's were the ones who jumped him and beat him up. After Pony saw that Johnny was shaking and scared, he realized that those were the ones who jumped him and that them might be in danger and will see them again in the future.

Quotation 2: "Johnny had a blank, tough look on his face - you'd have to know him to see the panic in his eyes. I stared at the Soc's coolly. Maybe they could scare us to death, but we'd never let them have the satisfaction of knowing it. It was Randy and Bob and three other Soc's, and they recognized us. I knew Johnny recognized them; he was watching the moonlight glint off Bob's rings with huge eyes" (54-55).

Explanation: In other words, when the Soc's were there with them and and recognized them, Johnny got really scared and was nervous. They tried to hid their fear but they were very scared so they couldn't, In all that though, Johnny was most scared of Bob and his rings because he might do something to them.
