The Apalachee is a Native American tribe that lived in the Florida Panhandle. They were farmers. They grew corn, squash, and beans.

Beaches are popular in Florida. Tourists come from all over the U.S. to see Florida's beaches. There is lots of of marine life in the waters of Florida like jellyfish, all different kinds of fish and lots of shells.

The Calusa was a fishing tribe. They lived in the southwest coast of Florida. They made tools and weapons out of shells and dead fish bones. 

The Everglades is filled with wild life. Some of the wild life is endangered. Some people are trying to save the endangered animals in the Everglades.  Sometimes people leave trash and sometimes animals eat the trash and get sick or choke and die.

The Great Depression effected Florida in many ways. In the 1920s people had stocks. Then, suddenly the stock market crashed. This was the Great Depression. Many people lost all their money, even the super rich. 

Iguanas are found in Florida. They are mostly found in the Florida Keys. They can be dangerous. They can bite, whip you with their tail, and claw you.

Jacksonville is a city in Florida. Jacksonville had the biggest population among all the cities in Florida. It is the largest city in Florida by area. It is next to the Atlantic Ocean. The city was named after Andrew Jackson. He was a president of the United States.

The Florida Keys are a series of islands. They are located on the south end of Florida. There are actually about 1700 islands that make up the Florida Keys. Some are big but some are no bigger than a few mangroves.

The state bird of Florida is the mockingbird.

NASA was formed in 1958. It means National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The military decided to move their rocket tests from White Sands, New Mexico to Cape Canaveral, Florida. This happened after missile in White Sands went off course during a test launch. Florida is better because if a missile is launched in Cape Canaveral, and goes off course, it will probably land safely in the ocean.

Florida is nearly surrounded by ocean. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Thousands of miles of Florida's coast touch the ocean. Sea animals live in the ocean. Organizations are set up to take care of the ocean.

Most of Florida is a peninsula. It is land nearly surrounded by water. It is surrounded on three sides. Florida's land has two main parts. One part is a peninsula which lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Quartz is a mineral. It is common in Florida. You can find it on Florida's beaches.

There was a boom in Florida's railroads after the Disston Purchase. A railroad line linked Pensacola to eastern Florida. Lines headed north. Railroads helped create new cities and helped small cities grow.

Tallahassee is the capital city of Florida. Before Tallahassee was chosen as the capital, Pensacola and St. Augustine were centers of government in Florida. In 1824, Governor DuVal chose Tallahassee as the new capital. Tallahassee is half way between Pensacola and St. Augustine.

The name de Vaca means "head of cow". Cabeza de Vaca was an explorer who visited Florida in the 1500s. He was a survivor Pánfilo de Narváez's expedition. He wrote about his experiences.

Walt Disney World opened in 1971. WDW is the most visited vacation resort in the world. It is located in central Florida. It is in Orange County. About 52 million people visit WDW each year.

Ybor City was founded by a group of cigar manufacturers. Many immigrants who worked at the cigar factories were Cuban. One of the main founders was Vicente Martinez Ybor so they named the city after him. Ybor City is in Tampa, Florida. Ybor City was founded in 1855.

"X" marks the Spot when pirates look for treasure. There were pirates who visited Florida. A pirate named Black Caesar raided the Florida Keys. He was one of Blackbeards crewmen.
