A simile is used in line 11. "Then- close the Valves of her own attention- Like stone-". It contributes to the tone and meaning to the poem because it is comparing her attention span to stone which means she enjoys being isolated from others and just wants stay away.

The central idea of this poem is to describe how she wants to exclude herself from a lot of the outside world. She wants to be enclosed in her room and not want to interact with anybody while symbolizing "closing the stone valves" as to close the stone gates that lead people into her life. The poem that she creates shows how her introverted personality has reached a level to where she has now become a recluse that does not want to be involved in the real world. She also enforces this idea by making an example of "an emperor kneeling on a mat". She uses this example as she still rejects the powerful and most likely influential emperor from even talking to her although he is "kneeling on a mat".

The author uses a careless tone that describes how she strongly dislikes having a lot of people inside of her life. Many sentences inside of the poem create and reveal these tones. For example, "The soul selects her own Society-Then-shuts the door. This quote describes her rude and daring demeanor when she "shuts the door" on her own society. Another example describes how she "close the valves of her attention-like stone", which describes how she ignores one who she does not deem fit to be able to interact with her, so she "closes the doors like stone".

There are many symbols that exist in this story, such as symbolizing the closing of her social life with "The valves close like stone". For example, many symbols that exist in this story symbolize how she has ignored and "Shuts the door to her divine majority". This symbolizes how she distances herself from others as well as pushes them away when they do make an effort in order to try to talk with her. The poem, "The soul selects her own society", symbolizes her introverted behavior.

The poetry relates to the author's life as it symbolizes how she is a recluse. The poem uses words such as "closing valves" to an "emperor kneeling". The quote symbolizes and strongly enforces her recluse personality and introverted emotions.
