It is a symbolic and literal warning about the effects of climate change on Singapore. The Merlion, an iconic statue and national symbol located near Marina Bay, represents the country’s identity and tourism. As global temperatures rise, polar ice melts and seawater expands, causing sea levels to increase. Since Singapore is a low-lying island nation, it is especially vulnerable to coastal flooding. If sea levels continue to rise, landmarks like the Merlion could be partially submerged or threatened by frequent flooding. This image serves as a powerful reminder of how climate change can directly impact even the most well-known places. It highlights the urgency for Singapore and the world to invest in climate action, such as building coastal defenses, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting sustainability. The flooded Merlion symbolizes a future we must work to prevent through environmental responsibility and global cooperation.

Now I think that longer and more equal parental leave for both parents is essential, especially in a country like Singapore facing an aging population. The proposed 12 months of paid leave for each parent shows a serious effort to support families and boost birth rates. However, the fact that parents may not return to the same job role makes me realize that true support goes beyond just time off — job security and career continuity also matter. It’s a complex issue that requires balancing family support with workplace stability and economic needs.

One thing I learnt in today’s lesson
I learnt that unconscious biases can influence everyday decisions like hiring without us even realising it. These biases can come from our upbringing, cultural norms, or even quick judgments (cognitive shortcuts). I also found it eye-opening that media and marketing often reinforce stereotypes, especially through emotional appeals.

One thing I am still mulling over
I'm still mulling over how deeply these stereotypes are embedded in marketing and social norms — especially the portrayal of seniors in Singapore. It makes me wonder how much of what we see in ads or media subtly shapes our beliefs without us noticing.

One thing I am struggling to understand
I’m struggling to understand how to practically apply the STOP framework in real-time decision-making. It sounds useful, but I’m unsure how to slow down and reflect when decisions need to be made quickly.

However, I also find myself conflicted when certain national narratives feel overly focused on economic success or uniformity, sometimes at the expense of creativity, emotional well-being, or minority voices. While I believe in unity, I also value individuality and feel that more space should be given to express differing views and identities without fear of judgment.

This reflection has made me realise that I have a role in shaping our national identity by staying open-minded, questioning stereotypes, and contributing to a more compassionate and inclusive societ
