Andrew Jackson’s candidacy marked the beginning of change for the future of politics. Before his election, America was in the era of good feeling and thriving economically. The single political party, Democratic Republicans, catered to the common man and promoted nationalism in the United States through the Monroe Doctrine, creating an American empire territorially. However, Jackson’s presidency, a turning point for America, not only terminated the era of good feeling, but birthed new political parties, including the Whigs and National Republicans, expanding their political division and causing change for future campaigning. Future politicians had to cater to sectionalism and the common man to secure political authority.

Prior to Andrew Jackson’s presidency America was in the era of good feelings. It had a one party system, causing peace after the terror of anti-federalist vs. federalists. At this time Jackson was loved across America due to winning the battle of New Orleans at the tail end of the war of 1812. This war led to a rush of nationalism throughout America, helping bring the south and north together. Not only did the war spread nationalism, it let America show the European countries they weren’t going anywhere by the Monroe doctrine, stating that America would wage war on any country that took land already claimed by America. As a result, Jackson had to appeal to the people, which is seen in the universal male suffrage under his presidency.

Prior to 1829, there were many wars and rebellions that shaped the U.S and led up to Jackson's presidency. The revolutionary war shaped the way many citizens thought about freedom and sovereignty. On top of this, there were already growing political parties like federalists and anti-federalists. Common men didn’t have much so fighting for political parties was extremely important and one of the little things poor white males had. Aside from white men, Indians had control of the western territory and after the revolutionary war, expansionism also expanded and the white Americans wanted land gain by taking away the Indians territory. The taken land was given to the common white men and shaped Jackson as a president for the common man. With growing expansionism, sovereignty, and political ideologies, Jackson became targeted for his ways of governing and was seen as a terror in trying to achieve goals not deemed popular by the Whig party and national republicans.

At the creation of the United States, although the founding fathers preached equality and freedom, only white male landowners were given any sort of say in politics. Prior to Andrew Jackson’s election in 1828, officials were primarily designated by politicians, not the people who they represented. American politics were primarily focused on appealing to those already in power, with no need to campaign to the unwashed masses. Once Jackson became president, he saw himself as a man of the people, and the “politics of the common man” were born, changing the way that politicians would approach government elections in the future.

Starting in 1828 when he was elected, Jackson vastly changed the course of America for the better and worse. Before he was elected president, Jackson was considered a war hero, with a major victory at New Orleans. He was a man strongly interested in the rights of the people, but became pretty radical in his ways. At the start of Jackson’s presidency, he set forth the 1830 removal act which forced the Natives out of their land and to move west to allow for America to expand and achieve Manifest Destiny. Soon after the removal act was put in place, Jackson destroys the national bank, and instead creates “pet banks.” This leads to the inflation of America’s currency, and eventually Jackson makes people buy land with only gold and silver, hurting the economy. In 1836, Universal Male Suffrage allowed for all white men to vote despite the land they owned or how much money they had. The result of this was that politicians now had to campaign to gain the votes of everyone, increasing propaganda and money spent to get into positions of power. From Andrew Jackson’s presidency, a new age of American political history was born from all of these changes he made. America would never be the same again.

At the end of the war of 1812, the battle of New Orleans was a major U.S. victory because of one U.S. general. That general’s name; Andrew Jackson. This battle was a display of nationalism and the country was very happy. As the war went on and on, the number of dead native americans would increase and increase. Andrew Jackson was a strong believer in taking out the native americans and claiming more and more land. This would end up being called manifest destiny and America loved it. Andrew Jackson would even go on to run for president running on the power of the common man and the belief that native americans are monsters.

In 1815, the war of 1812 officially ended, marking a new point in U.S. history. The hatred of native americans was on the rise by andrew jackson supporters and america as a whole wanted more land. Using the ideals of manifest destiny, America was to wipe out many tribes of native americans. After discovering the west coast from Lewis and Clark, America wanted more land than ever before. This idea of manifest destiny would go on to fuel Andrew Jackson’s presidency and help him become president, and change the future of the americans in the west forever, as it brought economic prosperity and trade in the pacific.

In 1830, Andrew Jackson would sign a very controversial act, removing the native american tribes inside of georgia. The supreme court voted against doing this and the native american tribes in that area even won a court case against being removed. But Jackson knew none of this mattered, he had more power after all. He passed this act starting the trail of tears and moving the native american people to Oklahoma. ⅓ of the cherokee would die on this journey. Despite the horrendous actions brought upon the natives, the American people wanted to expand westward.

Andrew Jackson primarily ran on the promise that he would act in the interests of the people, that he and he alone could represent the will of the majority. At the same time white male suffrage, the idea that all white men should be able to vote, was an increasing ideal in the United States. This set the precedent that presidential candidates can no longer run on the interests of the elites and must actually campaign to the common man, which we still see to this day.

As his presidency went on Jackson became more anti-establishment. He began losing support in the country, which is most evident by the political parties that were formed specifically around hating Jackson, such as the Whigs or Anti-Masonic party. As a last ditch effort to console a second term, Jackson promised the people the destruction of the most elite institution in the United States, the national bank. His scheme worked and as a result, he destroyed the national bank and gave the money to a multitude of Pet Banks that belonged to the states. This ended in an economic recession in the United States, but ultimately didn’t matter because the collapse of the national banking system was the will of the people, and therefore the only way to get elected is to support it anyway.

Andrew Jackson's years as president were very influential for the new era in American politics, in ways that shaped our country forever. Prior to his presidency, America was in the era of good feelings, anc coming off of Thomas Jefferson's presidency we were in a good state socially and economically. When Jackson was elected president, America started to be seen becoming more and more divided. After the war of 1812, Jackson was seen as a hero, but he ended up crashing the era of good feelings, and ended up creating the two party system which is exactly what George Washington warned us about. Jackson was seen as the president for the common man, always trying to be approved by them for land, started to become a target for the way in which he behaved and lead to more tensions arising in our newly formed country.

Prior to Andrew Jackson’s election as president, the era of good feelings was in full effect as new acts and compromises were being created. The only political party, the Democratic-Republicans, was for the common man, which was shown through the Monroe Doctrine. The election of President Andrew Jackson marked the new beginning of American political history, creating two completely different parties with opposing views. While Jackson proved to have some faults which led to campaigning among the common people; the election caused expansionism to the West, and more freedom for the common man, including universal male suffrage.

Throughout the 2 terms Andrew Jackson was in office many large political changes took place. He was a man who voiced his very strong opinion even if other political figures disagreed. Andrew Jackson started the pattern of giving recognition to the unwashed masses—Yeoman Farmers and other common white men. Universal white male suffrage is what made all white men capable of having a say in their country's government. Candidates collectively saw the need to go out and campaign to get the attention of the people. Jackson caused a turning point in political campaigns, voting, and overall election.

Andrew Jackson marked the end of the solid foundation Jefferson had laid during his presidency. During the election of 1824 Andrew Jackson was given an offer from Henry Clay, Clay would provide votes for Jackson so long as he guaranteed his appointment as secretary of state. Jackson declined, as it went against his morals, and the morals of the unwashed masses. In response to the offer, Jackson outed Clay for his corrupt plan. Eventually influencing the minds of the common men, Jackson had caused more and more common men to vote and participate in politics. This was because many of the yeoman farmers supported the candidates who were more for the people, more for them. This forced other elitist candidates to campaign, to win over the vote of the yeomen farmers and other common men. Along with influencing a new 2 party system that had evolved at the beginning of his election, these factors would change the way our country would vote forever.
