To begin, this document takes place in Virginia during the 1640's. Throughout the document, it showcased a rebellion between indentured servants and their planters. Depending on your race, your sentence for escaping may vary. This matters because people of color were never treated equally and indentured servants were willing to risk their lives in pursuit of freedom while escaping treatment similar to slaves.

The historical context of the source is one of the effects of Bacon's rebellion on the native Americans and the insurrection that was brought into Jamestown. This event led to the distrust of indentured servants for the use of labor. This allowed for enslaved Africans to gain higher usage over the use of indentured servants because farm owners thought they could control the enslaved Africans easily. This was the uprise of slavery and unfair treatment of Africans in the Americas.
