I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. Beagle. I started the book over the summer but never finished it, so I have decided to pick it back up again and finish it. There is a film adaptation of The Last Unicorn which was released in 1982. The film was first shown to me by my mom, it was my favorite childhood film growing up and still is. It is one of my favorite movies of ALL time. The movie is super special to me, it is also special because my mom showed it to me and she is my best friend. I love the film and its underlying meanings with every fiber of my being. As silly as it sounds this book has one of my favorite introductions of all time. I'm not one for introductions and I usually hate them/find them boorish, but the introduction in this book is so much more. I find the introduction an amazing first peek into the book. The book goes pretty hand and hand with the movie, so I love it just as much. The unicorn overhears one of the hunters saying they will find no game there because she lives there, that wherever a unicorn lives the other animals also ¨learn a little magic in their own time¨ and that they will find no game there because of that. The Unicorn overhears that there is a possibility that she is the last... This causes the Unicorn to then wonder where the others like her have gone. Unicorns are very magical creatures, they are not born with names, nor born to regret. No place is more magical than where a unicorn is born. It is always spring in the Unicorns Forrest because she lives there. The Unicorn starts to become very concerned and starts to feel worried for the first time in her life, the Unicorn udders words aloud to herself for the first time in hundreds of years. The Unicorn slowly but surely continues to grow more and more anxious, she is restless and cannot shake the thought of where the others like herself have gone. The Unicorn questions whether she should leave her forest for the first time and embark on a journey to find the others. She wonders if maybe they are hiding away looking for her, waiting for her. The Unicorn can no longer take the eternal battle with herself and she decides to leave her lilac wood and promises to return as soon as possible. She finds herself on ¨Mans Road¨ and travels for many days and many seasons, seeing not even a glimpse of anyone else like her. Losing hope she meets a spectacular butterfly who sings many joyous songs and tells many jokes. She asks the butterfly if he knows what she is, only the absolute pure of heart can see a Unicorn. The butterfly jokes and laughs, butterflies mostly say and sing songs they pick up along the way. Seeing as they don't live long it is the best way to live. the butterfly finally comes to a seriousness and says her name. Unicorn. The Unicorn is overjoyed by this, she is overjoyed that at least someone in the world knows her. The butterfly soon flies off and the unicorn continues to travel for many days, At this time she is almost captured by a man who mistakes her for a plain old ordinary white mare. This is when the Unicorn realizes that mankind does not recognize her. That maybe the others exist, but that men cannot see them. In this wagon is Mommy Fortuna. I wouldn't consider Mommy Fortuna the main villain in this story, though she does hold back the Unicorn in some way. Mommy Fortuna owns the ¨Midnight Carnival¨ Mommy Fortuna has two Helpers, the Magaican and Ruhk. Mommy Fortuna sees the Unicron sleeping on the edge of the road and knows what she is unlike others who have passed her on her journey. Mommy Fortuna instructs Ruhk and the Magaican to capture the Unicron, when saying this Mommy Fortuna states that no human hand or rope could hold and not touch her with their hands. Ruhk and the Magcican are asked what they see. Ruhk states he sees a plain white mare, this is true for him. The Magician states he sees a plain white mare as well, he is lying. The Magician knows her and sees her, but he lies to Mommy Fortuna, this is later discovered. This all takes place while the Unicorn sleeps, worried that she might wake soon Mommy Fortuna places a sleeping spell on her. Ruhk and the Magician build the last cage for the wagon around the Unicorn. The cage is made of Iorn bars, Iorn is known to ward off/hold in magic. This becomes important later. Mommy Fortuna soon sets up camp and sets up the Midnight Carnival. The Unicorn wakes up surrounded by bars and in a daze. The Unicorn is soon greeted by the Magacian who recognizes her and tells her he is a friend. The Magician swears to help her and shows the Unicron who m=Momym Fortuna really is. Mommy Fortuna is a witch, this is known, but it is not known that she is a fool and con artist. Her magic makes people see what they want to see, but it is not real. The Magician tells the Unicorn to look around, the Unicorn looks at the Manticore which in reality is a shabby old lion, but to the naked eye, it is a real Manticore. She looks at the Saytr which is really a sad monkey. There are many like this, to the human naked eye they are true monsters because that's what they want to see. Humans are obsessed with the strange, this is true. The only real animal like the Unicron is the Hapry. Mommy Fortuna caught the Harpy by chance just like she caught the Unicorn by chance. They are real magic. This is when the Unicron realizes Mommy Fortuna's magic is a trick.
