Loreta Janeta Velazquez was one of the famous Confederate female spies in the Civil War. She was born in Cuba on June 26th, 1842. At the age of 14, she ran off with an officer in the Texas army. As her husband refused to let her join the army with him and accidentally killed, she had a uniform made for her and disguised herself as a man, taking the name Harry T. Buford. She fought in the First Battle of Bull of Bull Run, Siege of Fort Donelson, and the Battle of Shiloh. Velazquez published the book, "The Women In Battle" describing her experience in the military and fighting in the wars. She was taken into custody and fined for impersonating a man and was released. Velazquez impacted the war because she demonstrated that women can also fight and do military activity.

Harriet Tubman (Union)

Harriet Tubman was a abolitionist and political. She was an escape slave who became a conductor in the underground railroad. Not only that but she was a nurse, a union spy, and a woman suffrage supporter. She was one of the most recognized role models. She was born in 1820 on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. She wanted justice at the age of 12, when she witnessed a superintendent about to throw a heavy weight at a fugitive slave. She got in between and the weight crashed with her head. Harriet Tubman changed the war by freeing slaves in the North. Using the underground railroad, she risked her life and helped give slaves freedom to the North. Harriet Tubman managed to free 300 slaves through the underground railroad, making her one of the most well-known people in the underground railroad.

This connects to today because without the strategies the spies used to revolutionize the Civil War, things in the United States would be like in the 1860's today. Like if the Confederate side won the Civil War, there would still be slavery today. If Lincoln never replaced his generals, the Union would have lost in the battles.
