Monks would mainly spend their time attending services during almost all hours of the day. Besides doing that monks were very respected in feudal society because they taught people how to read and write. Monks were the only social class who knew how to read and write ( except for some kings, religious figures, and lords) because of this monks would be responsible for copying the bible by hand. This process would take over a year to complete They were expected to live with very limited possessions and were told to keep quiet and some even took a vow of silence. One of the best things about being a monk was that they were provided with a secure home and a supply of food. This was a much easier life than what most other people had to live with in the middle ages.

Monasteries began as trends in Syria and Egypt. They did this because they thought that without any material, they could get closer to god. As this trend grew, some groups of individuals started living in groups, still isolated from society. This idea started spreading throughout the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. This is where people started their own different rituals and practices based on the teachings of St.Benedict. St.Benedict put in place the Benedictine code which encouraged people to live as simple a life as possible. Since monks all lived the same way they became known as brothers. Because monasteries were originally supposed to be self sufficient, monks had to produce food and go to services

Monks would usually rise with the sun, so they would usually wake up from 5:00 to 7:00. Monks would quickly wash and then would silently pray for an hour. Monks would then go to a group mass. Afterward a chapter meeting would be held to discuss matters relevant to the monastery. Monks then would have another work period where they would either pray or do labor if there wasn't anyone else to do it. This was then followed by high mass and the most important meal of the day, which most normal people would call lunch. The afternoon was then spent working again until about 4:30-6:00 where a monk would have supper and go to bed early.
