President Jackson supported Tariff of 1828. North wants protective tariffs so they can make more money off of their exports.

~ South was against this because it raised manufactured goods prices

Written by VP John C. Calhoun from SC anonymously. Stated it was a states right to not follow a law and nullify it. Congress passed another Tariff in 1832. South nullified it. John C. Calhoun resigned from VP and became a SC senator. President A.J urged Congress to pass a Force Bill & send troops to collect tariff. Calhoun & H.C succeeded in pushing the Tariff of 1833 and that lowered tariff. Sc nullified Force Bill.

~ There was a divide in between the North and the South

~ SC declares they can do unconstitutional things

~ Other Southern states follow SC's lead in support of state rights over the federal gov

Treaty of Guadalupe - Hidalgo gave land west to U.S completed Manifest Destiny. U.S was destined to expand from the A.O to the P.O

Henry C. got Congress to pass the Comp of 1850. The Comp had 5 parts. CA was a free state. Slave trade not allowed but slavery was in Washington D.C. Remaining land from Mexico people who lived there decided by popular sovereignty . Paid Texas $10 mil to give up land in NM.

~Strengthened Fugitive Slave Acts which made Northerners Angrier.

Was a response to the Fugitive Slave Act. More sympathy for slaves. Second popular book.

~ South didn't like the "exaggerations" about slavery

Urgent demands to organize western territories. The Gov wanted a Trans-Continental Railroad to connect East & West. Miss. Comp got repealed and replaced by popular sovereignty.

Dred Scott was a slave that was took into free territory. Felt he was free ever since and he sued to keep his freedom, but the Supreme Court decided that African Americans can't sue because they aren't citizens. And that Scott was property.

~ The Supreme Court says the Missouri Comp was not right because owners couldn't take "property" when they wanted to

John Brown was a white man who wanted to arm slaves for a slave uprising/ rebellion. But he failed to get weapons.

~ Sectionalism became worser because South feared abolitionists and freed slaves

Election of 1860

Suggested S.C leave the Union , Abraham Lincoln campaigned for "free soil". "Free soil" was the idea that slavery shouldn't expand to the territories. Lincoln was a free soldier. Six other states signed after. Members of the secession convention in 1860 voted to leave the Union. Unionists wanted to stay apart of the Union so they were still protected by the constitution. Cooperationists wanted to leave the Union but only if needed and if others would join. Secessionists supported secession since 1852 but most South Carolinians agreed with this view after Lincolns election.

~ Lincoln won the election, then S.C called and signed The Articles of Secession. It basically said that South Carolinians wasn't and wouldn't be protected by the federal government
