Ebola is a virus that causes severe inflammation and tissue damage throughout the body. It is known as a hemorrhagic fever virus, because it can cause problems with the clotting system of the body and it can lead to internal bleeding as the blood leaks from small blood vessels. People remain infectious as long as their blood contains the virus. Ebola first appeared in 1976 in a village near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are occasional Ebola disease outbreaks in people, occurring primarily on the African continent.

There are 2 licensed Ebola vaccines. Ervebo was licensed in November 2019 by the European Medicines Agency. The vaccine is safe and protective against the species Zaire ebolavirus. It is recommended by the Strategic Advisor Group of Experts (SAGE) on Immunization as part as a broader set of Ebola outbreak response tools. In May 2020, the European Medicines Agency recommended to grant marketing authorization to a second new vaccine delivered in 2 doses called the Zabdeno. This prophylactic 2-dose regimen is not suitable for an outbreak response where immediate protection is necessary.

People can also protect themselves from this disease by practicing good hygiene. It is important to wash your hands to prevent any sickly germs from Ebola. A alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be used when soap and water aren't available. A major prevention is not touching the bodies of people who died from the disease. Correct hand hygiene lowers the number of germs on the hands and limits the opportunity of receiving the ebolavirus.
