On May 10, 1933, university students in Berlin gathered to burn more than 25,000 books that were considered "non German". 40,000 people came to listen to Joseph Goebbles give a speech on the topic. This was a plan the Nazis put into place to control their values. They took books from libraries and threw them into big fires during ceremonies with music and special oaths. The students wanted to get rid of books that had foreign or immoral ideas, especially those by Jewish authors.

The book burning during the Holocaust was important because it showed how the Nazis wanted to control what people thought by getting rid of books that had ideas they didn’t like. It was a way to stop people from learning different opinions and to spread only Nazi beliefs.
