They begin with Assessment data to determine areas of strength and opportunities for growth then engage in planning and discussion for future learning experiences to help close the identified learning opportunity gaps. We also engage in weekly PLC meetings by subject areas and monthly IB PLC meetings to engage in the reflective conversations and practices to promote student learning.

Why Are IB Teachers Expected to Work Collaboratively?

IB teachers are expected to work together to create a supportive and cohesive educational environment. When teachers collaborate, they can share best practices, resources, and strategies, which boosts the overall quality of education. Plus, it ensures consistency in teaching methods and curriculum delivery, which is crucial for maintaining the high standards of the IB programme.

Role of Collaboration in Advancing Student Learning

Collaboration plays a huge role in advancing student learning by enhancing instructional quality, providing diverse perspectives, and supporting continuous improvement. When teachers work together, they can pool their expertise to create more effective and engaging lessons. Regular collaboration allows teachers to reflect on their practices, assess student progress, and make necessary adjustments to improve learning outcomes.

Leading Collaborative Planning to Meet Curriculum Standards

To lead collaborative planning effectively and meet the curriculum standards, it's essential to set clear goals, create a structured process - technology can help support this process. We’ve scheduled collaborative time once per term (i.e., 4 times a year), and department time is expected to be collaborative, happening twice per term, ensuring alignment and consistency across the curriculum.

Why are IB teachers expected to collaborate effectively?

One of the things that I love about the IB is the intentionality behind the curriculum and programme implementation. In collaborative planning teachers can be intentional about implementing programme requirements and can also see their own role in the programme. It is here where best practices are shared, agreements in student expectations and assessment of student work for and of learning. It is here also that they are able to view themselves as language teachers and designers of IB Learner Profile attributes.

What role do you think collaboration plays in advancing student learning?

Collaboration allows students to experience a fully planned curriculum where gaps are anticipated and differentiation can happen. When collaboration happens, teachers are able to build upon what students already know, deepening the educational experience.

How can you lead collaborative planning in order to effectively meet the curriculum standards of the PSP?

Part of my role is to find space and time for teachers to collaborate. My role also ensures that I hold teachers accountable. I am able to create strutures that ensure time is given for collaborative planning but also to ensure that it is documented for the written curriculum.

At our school, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) have collaborative planning times at least twice a week; Departments have at least once a month. I have started a DP/CP Implementation team that meets twice a month. Here we discuss the PSP and how we will establish collaborative planning as we move forward to become an authorized school.
