The Salem Witch Trial of 1692 was caused by an outbreak of suspicion, which led to 20 people being killed. In the 1600's, Protestant Christians left England and came to New England because they were unhappy with their churches teachings. The Protestant Christians became known as Puritans. The Puritans took everything thing in the Bible as fact and lived by it. In the Bible, it stated that the Devil could take over a person's body as one of its trick. After this, people began accusing others of being witches and turning against even their closest neighbors and friends. The Witch Trial lasted a little over 3 months and it finally ended when the governor's own wife was accused. Over 3 centuries later, historians today still have not agreed on the cause of the hysteria that erupted in Salem Massachusetts.

- Most of the accusers were on the western half, which was the poorer half. The majority of defenders and "witches" were on the eastern, but wealthier side
- Since the western side was poor, many people became angry and jealous, and started to accuse the more powerful people of being witches. They also started to accuse people because the balance of power was off between the two halves, so one was much successful than the other. This was a part of the cause of the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria.

He also believed that the girls had intoxicated others by their acting, leading to their terrible success
- Upham also mentioned how he thought that the adults and community were blind, and fooled by the girl's acting.
In addition, many of the girls were young and foolish enough that they were too caught up in their newfound fame to realize that their accusations were affecting other people's lives; in a negative way
