 During her trip, Tally was pretty scared but the dominating emotion was perseverance as she was decided to carry out her mission and to get there in time for people to belive she left before her birthday.
When exposed for the first time to the helicopters, she was disgusted as the havoc wreaked by the wind made her think of it as barbaric and she deeply respects life, as she was horrified when she saw the rangers burn the flowers.
This opinion was further demonstrated as she was against eating rabbit meat and even initially went against cutting trees.
She is also thoughtful because she realises the smoke is many people's home and if she called Dr. Cable, all their work would be ruined and their world collapse.

And when she gets there there the trouble is not over ... she still has to decide whether or not she wants to activate the neckless that Cable gave her for when she reaches the smoke. because if she does she will be granted some previledges but will destroyed a lot of lives and trust that people had in her. and if she dosen't she will not be able to complete her dream of being pretty but she'll have a chance to live a life that would have a much deeper meaning than the live she would of lived in the pretty towns

The first problem that inefired with their friendship was the mission of Dr Cable. If tally used the necklace to communicate the city the whole smoke would of suffer including Shay. and the second one is the conflic that occures with Tally's and Shay's feelings for David. In my opinion that conflict will be the one to decide the fate of the friendship. Because as we know: when there's love in the mix it never ends well.

On one hand, she wants to become a pretty to join Peris and continue her life as she always meant to, but on the other hand, she is getting attached to the smoke and realizes that this is the home of actual people that would lose everything if she called on the special circumstances. The conflict is between Tally and herself.

There is also a conflict starting because of the attraction she feels towards David. Shay has strong feelings for David and he is why Shay actually left the city. David developping feelings for Tally is from Shay's point of view a betrayal. Therefore, it is Tally against Shay.

This passage is important because it is at this moment that we get a clear developpement of Tally's character as she is finally able to get rid of the mindset that was implemented in her at the city. She finally gets passed the thought that only the people who got the surgery can be pretty.
