Araminta Ross (Harriet Tubman) was born into slavery on March 1819 or 1820. When Harriet was 12 she had a head injury caused by a white overseer after she refused to help him tie up a man who tried to escape. The injury had caused her to suffer from epilepsy for the rest of her life.

In 1844 at the age of 24 she married a man named John Tubman. He was a free African American who did not share her dream. Since she was a slave she knew there was a chance she could be sold and their marriage would be split apart. In 1849 she left her husband and escaped to Philadelphia.
