Adaptable is one of the personal characteristics which helps me determine how I need to respond changes. According to Shirley (2016), people who have high adaptability are often described as “flexible, team players, or as someone who goes with the flow" (Shirley, 2016). There are a lot of benefits and impacts by being adaptable, not only in my personal lives but also in any working places. In the case of business situation, every company or organization is required to follow new trends or customers’ needs which are rapidly changing in order to survive in this world.

In order to get a better adaptable skill, I need to get ready to accept for any situations, issues or environment first. I believe I can prepare for being adaptable by making sure what motivates me again. For instance, if personal growth is my primary motivation then I can try to see adaptability through the lens of self-improvement; if having great relationships are motivation for me, then I will think about how rich and meaningful my relations with others will be after I adapt. I think it depends on how I frame the problem through my mind drives my reaction, so if I redefine how I see the problem then I can set myself up for success or at least positive way.

When I had a leadership interview before I learned more casual leadership style is required lately and leaders need to change their leadership style in each situation. As each person is completely different, and each leader and group have its own working styles, I can embrace one of four leadership styles; “directing, coaching, supporting, and entrusting”, based on a combination of relationship and task behavior (Daft , 2015, p.69). By placing myself in different situations, I can do self-train to be adaptable and also for the future, I can feel comfortable to work with anybody and in any environment.

Goal 2: High level of EQ

There are countless emotions that people are constantly facing and, with this, comes great complexity in managing them. EQ is one of the primary skills in dealing with emotional situations, and it is distinctly different from cognitive intelligence (IQ). According to Daft (2015), EQ is described as “a person’s abilities to perceive, identify, understand, and successfully manage emotions in self and others” (Daft, 2015, p.146). It can be said that, based on the class materials, EQ includes the ability to comprehend and express personal emotions, recognize others’ feelings and helps in solving personal problems. I strongly believe that in a business situation, a leader who has the high level of EQ is able to work more effectively in team environments. Consequently, an emotional leader can strengthen relationships, and be more self-motivated to accomplish personal goals.

Action Strategy: 1 Communication

I believe that having a communication is one of the biggest key points for getting the high level of EQ. By communicating with own colleagues, I can create great engagement with them, and it allows me to provide everyone more comfortable workplace and reduces the pressure and stress for everyone. For me, the comfort level in a workplace is extremely important to the relationship between leaders and employees. In fact, as Daft (2015) mentioned, it is believed that a person’s EQ should be more important than their IQ, which can have direct impacts on personal success, quality of relationships, and overall everyone’s happiness. Because so, I will continually mention to my colleagues “I am always here for you as your leader.”

For example, I was a violinist before and in order to get new technics or not to make a mistake for my own concert or competition, I kept practicing the violin every day. I think it is pretty difficult to keep to practice something and it takes so much time, but if I practice as much as possible I can get used to doing it and allow me to develop myself by getting new skills. And also, it will be my own strengths forever. I feel I can say the same thing to the improvement of EQ as well. Just easy or small practice such as asking myself why this person behaves like that, why I am feeling like this right now and so on lots of thigs I can do it.
